Medical Technologist - Microbiology performs a variety of microbiological procedures in order to cultivate, isolate and identify microorganisms in skin scrapings, exudates, body fluids and surgical specimens. Conducts routine and specialized microbiological procedures, including virological, mycological, bacteriological, and parasitological assays for use in diagnosing and treating disease. Being a Medical Technologist - Microbiology verifies accuracy of findings, identifies test inconsistencies, and takes appropriate action to make corrections and resolve problems. Operates, cleans, and maintains laboratory equipment used in microbiological analysis and procedures. Additionally, Medical Technologist - Microbiology requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Typically requires an American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification or its equivalent. May require a state license to practice. Works in a busy environment around physicians, technologists, and other hospital employees. Works in an area, which contains biohazardous (infectious) materials along with chemical, fire, and mechanical hazards. Each employee has the responsibility to work in a safe manner. May be required to stoop, reach, and lift light (20 pound) to moderately heavy (50 pound) loads.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE:
MLS (ASCP) acceptable. M(ASCP) preferred. B.A./B.S. in Biology, Chemistry, or related scientific discipline acceptable. B.A./B.S. in Biology, Chemistry or related scientific discipline candidates are required to obtain an MLS(ASCP) or M(ASCP) certification within one year of on-boarding.
