Medical Technologist - Microbiology performs a variety of microbiological procedures in order to cultivate, isolate and identify microorganisms in skin scrapings, exudates, body fluids and surgical specimens. Conducts routine and specialized microbiological procedures, including virological, mycological, bacteriological, and parasitological assays for use in diagnosing and treating disease. Being a Medical Technologist - Microbiology verifies accuracy of findings, identifies test inconsistencies, and takes appropriate action to make corrections and resolve problems. Operates, cleans, and maintains laboratory equipment used in microbiological analysis and procedures. Additionally, Medical Technologist - Microbiology requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Typically requires an American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification or its equivalent. May require a state license to practice. Medical Technologist - Microbiology's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Certification and/or licensing in the position's specialty is the main requirement. Technologist Trainee - Microbiology

    The Esoteric Microbiology Technologist Candidate will aid in the identification of microorganisms such as Acid Fast Bacilli (AFB), fungi, and others through a variety of methods including: special stains, antigen detection, DNA probes, culture reading, PCR, Sequencing, MALD-TOF, and others. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, assisting customer service and specimen management, and problem solving to ensure accurate results and compliance. This position involves propagation of CDC risk group 3, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis. These activities occur with appropriate personal protective equipment and within our level 3 biosafety laboratory.

    The work schedule for this position will be Monday - Friday 2:00pm-10:30pm with rotating Saturdays.

    Job Duties/Responsibilities:

    •  Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria
    • Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures
    • Monitor, operate and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality
    • Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving.
    • Prepare, test and evaluate new reagents or controls
    • Report accurate and timely test results in order to deliver quality patient care
    • Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures
    • Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary
    • Assist with processing of specimens when needed
    • Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Medical Technology or a related science
    • Previous experience is not required at the Technologist Trainee level
    • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
    • Proficient with computers; Familiarity with laboratory information systems are a plus
    • High level of attention detail along with strong communication and organizational skills
    • Must be able to pass a standardized color vision screen
    • Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs
