Medical Technologist - Microbiology performs a variety of microbiological procedures in order to cultivate, isolate and identify microorganisms in skin scrapings, exudates, body fluids and surgical specimens. Conducts routine and specialized microbiological procedures, including virological, mycological, bacteriological, and parasitological assays for use in diagnosing and treating disease. Being a Medical Technologist - Microbiology verifies accuracy of findings, identifies test inconsistencies, and takes appropriate action to make corrections and resolve problems. Operates, cleans, and maintains laboratory equipment used in microbiological analysis and procedures. Additionally, Medical Technologist - Microbiology requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Typically requires an American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification or its equivalent. May require a state license to practice. Job Summary:
The Microbiology Technologist accurately performs a variety of microbiological procedures for the cultivation, isolation and identification from urine, throat, vaginal and wound specimens in conformance with state and federal regulatory guidelines.
Hours:
Tuesday – Saturday, (7:00a – 3:30p)
Duties/Responsibilities:
Conducts routine and specialized microbiological procedures including bacteriology/yeast isolation and identification, Gram stain and susceptibilities.
Responsible for the preventive maintenance and function checks procedures of equipment, as well as performing corrective action when necessary.
Ensures patient specimen stability, proper sample processing and takes appropriate corrective action when errors are detected, or rejections/recollections are required.
Performs all quality control procedures to ensure validity and analytic performance of test results and troubleshoots according to laboratory protocols.
Exhibits efficient use of time and resources, meeting expectations for turnaround time (TAT).
Treats all proficiency testing samples according to regulatory agencies’ guidelines and laboratory expectations.
Trains department personnel.
Maintains proficiency and competency in performance for the Microbiology testing menu.
Participates in regulatory agencies’ inspection readiness and onsite inspections.
Communicates effectively and timely as needed to coworkers, department leadership and other divisions.
Performs equipment and assay verifications, validation and equivalencies according to the approved plans.
Cross-train in Molecular, as needed.

Education / Certifications:
Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution; or
Associate’s degree in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
