Medical Technologist - Microbiology performs a variety of microbiological procedures in order to cultivate, isolate and identify microorganisms in skin scrapings, exudates, body fluids and surgical specimens. Conducts routine and specialized microbiological procedures, including virological, mycological, bacteriological, and parasitological assays for use in diagnosing and treating disease. Being a Medical Technologist - Microbiology verifies accuracy of findings, identifies test inconsistencies, and takes appropriate action to make corrections and resolve problems. Operates, cleans, and maintains laboratory equipment used in microbiological analysis and procedures. Additionally, Medical Technologist - Microbiology requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Typically requires an American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification or its equivalent. May require a state license to practice. Brief Description of Position: The Medical Technologist is responsible to the Laboratory Manager/ Supervisor and the Laboratory Medical Director. The Medical Technologist will perform clinical laboratory procedures in chemistry, hematology, serology, referred procedures, urinalysis, and phlebotomy. The Medical Technologist will also share in performance of clinical lab functions such as quality assurance, cost effective management and other projects associated with operation of the laboratory, including meeting the scheduling requirements of the laboratory. The Medical Technologist may also be required to perform special tasks including but not limited to: individual projects, departmental section responsibilities, serving on Hospital committees or QI teams. The Medical Technologist will be responsible for all duties as assigned by the Laboratory Manager or Supervisor.
