Medical Technologist - Microbiology performs a variety of microbiological procedures in order to cultivate, isolate and identify microorganisms in skin scrapings, exudates, body fluids and surgical specimens. Conducts routine and specialized microbiological procedures, including virological, mycological, bacteriological, and parasitological assays for use in diagnosing and treating disease. Being a Medical Technologist - Microbiology verifies accuracy of findings, identifies test inconsistencies, and takes appropriate action to make corrections and resolve problems. Operates, cleans, and maintains laboratory equipment used in microbiological analysis and procedures. Additionally, Medical Technologist - Microbiology requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Typically requires an American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification or its equivalent. May require a state license to practice. Medical Technologist - Microbiology's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Certification and/or licensing in the position's specialty is the main requirement.     Position Summary:
    The Medical Technologist/Laboratory Scientist evaluates and performs analysis. Provides information for patient diagnosis and treatment by performing laboratory test, chemistry, hematology, toxicology, immunology, blood bank and microbiology.

    Duties/Responsibilities:
    •    Analyzes laboratory samples( including proficiency test samples) as defined by laboratory procedure and or established protocol in:
    •    Performs, evaluates and records quality control procedures as defined by laboratory procedure or established protocol; performs and documents appropriate corrective action before reporting patient results.
    •    Reports laboratory results as defined by the patient’s clinical condition and laboratory policy for routine, one-hour turnaround, timed and life threatening reporting.             
    •    Responds to hospital and laboratory related problems in a professional manner to assist other medical professionals with emergency patient care as defined in disaster plan protocols and as needed for emergency patient care and as warranted by laboratory staffing.
    •    Performs instrument maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting as needed and as defined by manufacturer’s and laboratory guidelines and utilizes appropriate backup procedures for laboratory procedure analysis when until instrument repair is complete.
    •    Assigns accurate laboratory charges and credits as appropriate as defined by laboratory policy, federal and state regulations and fair billing practices including verification that covered proper diagnosis is obtained from the physician for laboratory testing and obtains Advanced Beneficiary Notice as necessary.
    •    Participates in educational activities to maintain professional competency in laboratory developments. 
    •    Maintains safe work environment by following laboratory safety, infection control and dress code policies, procedures and protocols.

    Education:
    Bachelor’s Degree required. 

    Experience: 
    Experience is preferred.

    Licensure/Certification: 
    Certification with American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologist (AMT), or must be registry eligible (must obtain within one year in position).
