Medical Technologist - Microbiology performs a variety of microbiological procedures in order to cultivate, isolate and identify microorganisms in skin scrapings, exudates, body fluids and surgical specimens. Conducts routine and specialized microbiological procedures, including virological, mycological, bacteriological, and parasitological assays for use in diagnosing and treating disease. Being a Medical Technologist - Microbiology verifies accuracy of findings, identifies test inconsistencies, and takes appropriate action to make corrections and resolve problems. Operates, cleans, and maintains laboratory equipment used in microbiological analysis and procedures. Additionally, Medical Technologist - Microbiology requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Typically requires an American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification or its equivalent. May require a state license to practice. Performs lab tests in the areas of bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, parasitology. Identifies bacteria and susceptibilities, molds, yeast, parasites, Tuberculosis and other related organisms. Performs clinical laboratory procedures, examinations and other tests pursuant to established protocols including maintaining equipment and records, and performing quality assurance activities related to examination performance requiring the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility.
Job Responsibility
1.Sets-up and performs a variety of routine and/or complex laboratory tests and procedures relevant to the particular lab area. Prepares and tests specimens for examination and reports results.
2.Follows established in-process quality control procedures including recording data.
3.Performs routine and/or preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment.
4.Troubleshoots basic instrumentation, culture media, chemicals, reagents, stains, solutions, technical problems and methodologies.
5.Performs lab tests in the areas of bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, parasitology in accordance with Microbiology Policy and Procedure manual.
6.Maintains sufficient supplies at work station.
7.Ensures and maintains quality control and assurance activities.
8.Uses Infection Control practices and procedures including, but not limited to, wearing gloves, goggles, protective masks and other safety equipment.
9.Under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, may perform a variety of teaching duties related to training of students, new employees, etc., and participates in ongoing education assignments.
10.Performs related duties, as required.
Job Qualification
1.Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or related degree, required.
2.Licensed by New York State Education Department as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, required.
3.Minimum of one (1) year work experience and/or training specific to the work being done in the area noted above, required.
