Director of Athletics

ROLE SUMMARY
The Director of Athletics will play a pivotal role in leading, managing, and advancing the athletic department, with a dedicated focus on enhancing the overall student-athlete experience. This leadership position requires proficiency in areas such as project management and fundraising. Serving as the primary leader of the department, the Director of Athletics must actively collaborate with members of the athletic staff, school leaders, faculty, staff, and parents to foster an outstanding student culture within Valor Athletics, aligned with Valor’s vision and mission. The success of sports programming relies on maintaining a comprehensive suite of services for students. These include but are not limited to athletic performance, injury prevention and care, college recruitment, association and league memberships, athletic facility oversight, youth programs and initiatives. The Director of Athletics is tasked with attracting, retaining, and professionally developing exceptional individuals within the department. In overseeing all facets of the department, the Director of Athletics is committed to providing an exceptional experience for student-athletes. This involves ensuring highly capable coaches, top-notch facilities, and student services that elevate athletes to a collegiate standard.

Athletic Department Leadership Responsibilities
Provide visionary and inspirational leadership for excellent high school athletics programming with exceptional managerial abilities
Develop and execute a yearly Athletics Operating Plan that sets priorities, advances the work of each sports program, addresses the needs of student athletes, and ensures work toward overall school initiatives
Evaluate, establish, and manage appropriate budgets for athletic programs
Ensure the maintenance of standards established by CHSAA and those organizations that examine and accredit Valor
Team leader and culture builder who is capable of delegating and empowering while also holding people accountable to results
Engage in direct relationship building with parents and donors in fundraising efforts to enhance Valor’s athletic facilities and programs
Recruit, evaluate, and retain highly capable athletics personnel and coaches who advance the mission and vision of Valor Athletics
Maintain an athletic program that promotes sportsmanship and welcomes competing teams and guests
Strong ability in engaging parents and resolving conflict as sometimes necessary in high-performing athletic programs

Collaboration and Communication with the School Leadership Team
As a member of the Cabinet leadership team, the Director of Athletics is particularly responsible for defining, cultivating and leading our Christian community. Cabinet leaders must not only comply with standards but also affirm additional distinctive Christian beliefs of our community in the Christian Community Policy or otherwise as determined by the board of directors.
Work collaboratively with Cabinet leaders in Academics, Arts, Discovery, Student Life, and Spiritual Formation to discuss and provide action on critical issues facing the school and to engage the community in school-wide initiatives that propel the school forward in alignment with a distinctively Christian mission and vision
Serve as the communication liaison between athletic staff and the Cabinet leadership team. Participate in open dialogue with team members to ensure that gaps are filled in with knowledge and trust is promoted across pillar areas
Seek counsel and meet regularly with the Associate Head of School and other school leadership members
Periodically engage with the board of directors to seek input on strategic planning and provide monthly information about the work of the athletic department

The Director of Athletics will provide strong leadership, driven by a desire to create an exceptional Christian athletic experience. Through performance data and survey feedback, the Director of Athletics will have a clear understanding of areas of improvement for the athletic staff and coaching team and will ensure that the parent and student experience is executed at a high level. The Director of Athletics will display a commitment to the Valor community, paying special attention to hearing and responding to the needs of families. Under this person’s guidance, the athletic department will be on the cutting edge of best practices, remaining above reproach in all that they do and expecting excellence from every team member.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field required; Masters preferred
Minimum of 5 years of experience in high school or collegiate athletic leadership
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Background in coaching and track record of coaching success
Familiar with utilizing emerging technologies, software, and applications to promote and enrich student activities
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral/depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The work environment characteristics are varied and include classroom, office, and outdoor events while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is also varied.

PAY RANGE: $90,000 - $120,000
