Mental Health Technician observes and assists assigned mental health patients and helps with daily living activities, therapeutic activities, and socialization. Responsible for the overall maintenance of a therapeutic environment in the psychiatric unit and to ensure the safety of patents and staff. Being a Mental Health Technician attends and participates in group therapy, in-service education, and staff meetings. Records information about patients including vital signs, weight, and demeanor. Additionally, Mental Health Technician may communicate with patients family as needed. Typically requires an associate degree or equivalent. Typically reports to a registered nurse (rn) or other supervisor. The Mental Health Technician works under moderate supervision.     In a highly specialized field of psychiatry, our goal is to promote cognitive, social, physical and emotional development to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills to help our patients succeed.

    The Hospital is looking for a Mental Health Tech/CNA (7A- 3:30P). In this position you will be responsible for providing the direct care to children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders, as well as substance abuse, to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the patients. MHTs have the primary responsibility for ensuring the patient's safety on the unit.

    Job Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Conducts patient monitoring and observation 15 minute checks
    • Assists nursing staff on unit
    • Ensure the safety and well-being of the patients
    • Knowledge of risk and safety precautions in the care of patients
    • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, co-workers, physicians
    • React calmly and effectively in emergency situations

    Qualifications

    Job Requirements:

    • High school graduate or equivalent. Bachelor's Degree in psychology or related field preferred.
    • Minimum 1 year previous psychiatric/behavioral direct care experience in a psychiatric hospital setting as a Mental Health Tech working with children, adolescents and/or adults.
    • Demonstrates the ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
    • Extensive walking, standing, sitting, Must be able to lift over fifty (50 lbs.) pounds. Must be to participate in the physical restraint and seclusion of patients. Must be able to participate in and complete Handle With Care Training on an annual basis.
