Mental Health Technician observes and assists assigned mental health patients and helps with daily living activities, therapeutic activities, and socialization. Responsible for the overall maintenance of a therapeutic environment in the psychiatric unit and to ensure the safety of patents and staff. Being a Mental Health Technician attends and participates in group therapy, in-service education, and staff meetings. Records information about patients including vital signs, weight, and demeanor. Additionally, Mental Health Technician may communicate with patients family as needed. Typically requires an associate degree or equivalent. Typically reports to a registered nurse (rn) or other supervisor. The Mental Health Technician works under moderate supervision.     The Mental Health Technician (MHT) provides basic nursing care, aids with activities of daily living, and assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean environment, under the direction and supervision of the Mental Health Technician 2s (MHT 2s), Milieu Specialists, and Charge Nurses. Duties include but not limited to:

    1. Ensure safety of patients at all times. Consistently provide supervision for assigned patients.
    2. Communicate and document the patient's status and behavior legibly, accurately, and in a timely manner.
    3. Consistently record and/or report to the Milieu Specialist or Charge Nurse any treatments, results, observations, patient complaints, and other pertinent information regarding the condition of the patient.
    4. Perform daily patient care tasks, including feeding and bathing patients as needed. Performs basic housekeeping tasks required to maintain patient living areas, which may include cleaning soiled beds and floors.
    5. Orient patients to the unit. Assist with body/contraband checks/searches.
    6. Assist with admission, transfer, and discharge processes under the guidance of the Charge/Staff Nurse.
    7. Utilize least restrictive and most facilitative measures to de-escalate patients, such as 1:1 conversation ("1:1"), diversional activities, groups, peer support, or decreased stimuli.
    8. Assist in providing intervention and/or management of inappropriate behavior in the milieu. Available for 1:1 interaction with patients. Demonstrate skills in co-leading groups and activities.
    9. Complete rounds and document findings accurately and timely, in accordance with hospital policy and procedures.
    10. Follow appropriate observation level for patient: every 15 minutes or 1:1. Utilizes and monitors for specific precautions as ordered.

    Qualifications

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:

    • High School Diploma or Equivalent required
    • Current CPR certification required
    • Experience in a psychiatric setting preferred.
    • Minimum two (2) years of education focused on nursing, psychology, social service, medicine or related field preferred.

    • Completion of EMT, CNA, Medical Assistant, Security Training program or equivalent preferred.

    KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

    • Must be able to interact positively with patients whose behavior may be difficult, uncooperative or aggressive;
    • Must be capable of adapting to varying workloads and work assignments on a constant basis;
    • Must be able to perform concentrated and/or complex mental activity with frequent involvement in complex and/or highly technical situations;
    • Must be able to work successfully under highly stressful conditions;
    • Must be able to make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles;
    • Must be able to comprehend and perform oral and written instructions and procedures;
    • Must be able to collaborate with other multidisciplinary team members in an appropriate fashion;
    • Must have effective comprehensive reading skills, strong communication skills, written and verbal.
    • Must possess a valid California Driver's License in order to transport patients and/or staff, or drive hospital vehicles.
