Mental Health Technician observes and assists assigned mental health patients and helps with daily living activities, therapeutic activities, and socialization. Responsible for the overall maintenance of a therapeutic environment in the psychiatric unit and to ensure the safety of patents and staff. Being a Mental Health Technician attends and participates in group therapy, in-service education, and staff meetings. Records information about patients including vital signs, weight, and demeanor. Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health invites applications for the position of Mental Health Technician (MHT). Located in Norfolk Virginia, Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health is a leading community partner providing acute, residential, and Partial Hospitalization treatment for children and teens exhibiting behavioral and/or mental health concerns. The hospital is dedicated to providing high quality care to children, adolescents and their families. We provide quality care to children and adolescents in need, using quality, evidence based practice treatments. Founded in 1986, Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health is an 82-bed hospital facility accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC), and licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS).
Reporting to the Program Director, the MHT is the first level of care, in a series of levels of care, in serving as a role model for patients/residents to observe and learn socially effective values, attitudes, and behaviors. The MHT ensures the environment remains safe, and normative culture remains positive throughout the facility. Additional duties and responsibilities include:
1. Actively participates as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team to establish, evaluate, update, and revise comprehensive treatment plans for assigned patients/residents.
2. Implements programs to help patients/residents learn and demonstrate acceptable behaviors.
3. Supervises and assists patients/residents in the attainment of treatment goals.
4. Fosters effective communication in the milieu consistent with therapeutic goals; fosters effective communication with staff members, and champions dialogue in addressing concerns.
5. Serves as a role model for patients/residents to observe and learn socially effective values, attitudes and behaviors; demonstrates Service Excellence.
6. Interprets facility and departmental policies and works cohesively with department in the attainment of organizational objectives.
7. Orients new patients/residents to the complex to ensure patients receive a warm welcome; and understand program expectation.
8. Ensures scheduled activities are followed; engages in problem solving.
9. Facilitates and documents community meetings and unit groups as appropriate; escorts patients to areas within the facility, and redirects inappropriate behavior.
10. Completes routine and special precaution rounds in a staggered fashion; initiates corrective action as appropriate; documents and ensures all written entries meets organizational standards.
11. Actively provides a safe and therapeutic milieu, crisis intervention and assistance with activities of daily living in a therapeutic environment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. A minimum of six months of experience working with children. Candidates with a high school diploma/GED and no experience working with children unsupervised, may be employed, as long as they receive direct supervision from a seasoned professional (as defined by the hospital) for a minimum of 6 months.
2. Direct patient care experience, CNA licensure, or previous acute/behavioral health related experience preferred.
3. Demonstrated ability to read and follow verbal and nonverbal instructions, with limited supervision.
4. Knowledge of general addictions and psychiatric nursing process, therapeutic relationships and processes, age specific growth and development, limit setting crisis and behavior management strongly preferred.
5. Must successfully complete pre-service training, to include Verbal De-Escalation; Handle With Care; CPR training.
6. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
7. Skill in the use of computer systems and software applications, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel).
8. Must be able to handle multiple competing task, with minimum supervision, and take initiative on matters of revolving urgency.
9. QMHP–C certification desired, but not required.
