PLANNER I/SENIOR PLANNER
The City of Danville is seeking a qualified professional to serve as a Planner in our Community Development Division. This position involves the application of professional planning knowledge and skills to enhance the quality of life and improve the welfare of the community by creating a more convenient, equitable, efficient and attractive urban environment.
Normal Work Hours: 7:30am to 4:00pm Salary Range: $50,000 - $70,000
Duties: Under direction from the Planning & Grants Manager, perform complex, professional level duties related to current and advance planning activities. Develop plans, policies, procedures and regulations related to community planning and transportation planning. Assist with implementation of the City’s Comprehensive Plan, creation and implementation of other community plans, and work to engage governmental and non-governmental agencies within the Metropolitan Planning Area to facilitate a coordinated transportation planning effort.
Qualifications: The following are minimum qualifications. Extensive related experience will be considered in lieu of these position requirements if they represent similar skills, knowledge, and levels of responsibility.
Education and Experience:
- Candidate must possess a four (4) year degree in urban planning, urban design, geography or a related field.
- At least five (5) years of progressive practical experience in this field or a closely related field.
- Experience working in or with local or state government.
- Experience working in a team environment, and with committees and groups.
Required Skills: The following skills are basic to the functions of this position.
- Knowledge of urban spatial structure and the way in which cities function.
- Knowledge of plan-making and project evaluation.
- Well-developed knowledge of one or more planning disciplines such as land use regulation, economic development, housing, transportation planning, infrastructure planning, neighborhood planning, historic preservation, or urban design.
- Ability to work with the public and articulate planning issues to a wide variety of audiences.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Strong organizational and technical skills.
- Understanding of local, state and federal government programs and processes.
- Ability to interpret complex rules and regulations.
- Ability to multi-task and address several projects or issues simultaneously.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and Geographic Information Systems Software.
- Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator), and Sketch-Up, is preferred.
Required Licenses: The person holding this position must have the following licenses.
- Illinois Class D Vehicle Operators License.
- Professional certification (AICP) is preferred at time of hire, but should be achieved within 2 years.

Residency Requirements: Unless otherwise dictated by a Collective Bargaining agreement, employees of the City of Danville, must establish their principal place of residence within 45 miles of the corporate limits of the City. An employee of the City who successfully completes their probationary period of employment shall then have a period of 6 months to establish residence within the 45 miles of the corporate limits of the City.
