Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the Utility Office Manager, the Backflow/Meter Technician is responsible for inspecting, testing, and maintaining backflow prevention devices and overseeing the backflow prevention program. The Backflow/Water Meter Tech will also be responsible for installing, testing, reading, and repairing water meters, completing work orders for special readings, connecting and disconnecting water services, and performing related duties as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following tasks:

• Maintain a citywide backflow prevention program in conjunction with the Ohio EPA;
• Test and observe the testing of backflow devices;
• Advise contractors of the proper requirements and installations of meters and backflow devices;
• Complete surveys for Industrial/Commercial facilities for proper compliance with backflow regulations and make recommendations;
• Replaces and installs water meters and remote readers in residential-type settings. Reads meters as needed;
• Disconnects service for delinquent accounts; Handles customer complaints and inquiries; Inspects waterlines (new or replacements) for materials used and depth;
• Locates water services for “OUPS” inspections;
• Maintains records of meters and various tasks performed throughout the day and completes work orders for work accomplished.
• Able to start before 7:30 am, work past 4:00, and work on Saturdays when necessary, coordinating with the other Meter Tech/coworker.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of the degree of hazard and methods of backflow prevention*
• Knowledge of the theory of backpressure, back-siphonage, and cross-connection
• Knowledge of customer service
• General knowledge of the tools used in the plumbing trade.
• Ability to walk and climb stairs for extended periods
• Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds
• Ability to read meters and record records accurately
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates and customers.
• Ability to maintain records and prepare reports
• Ability to analyze surveys and select appropriate backflow devices.

Minimum Requirements for Employment: The selected candidate must possess all of the following requirements:

• Completion of High School and two (2) years experience in any occupation that involves direct customer contact and the operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment.
• Possession of a valid State of Ohio Vehicle Operator’s License, remaining insurable under the city’s vehicle operation policy and having an acceptable driving record as deemed by the City of Wadsworth.
• OTCO or Ohio DOC Certified Tester License, or to acquire within one (1) year of appointment to the position.

Special Information:

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of criminal background checks, employment reference checks, physical examination and a pre-employment drug screen.
