Meter Reader is responsible for reading electric, gas, or water meters. Keeps track of their use by recording appropriate information. Being a Meter Reader inspects meters for damages or defects. Requires a high school diploma. Additionally, Meter Reader typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Meter Reader may require 0-1 year of general work experience. BASIC FUNCTION: The Meter Technician is responsible for reading, testing and maintaining water meters according to detailed schedules and instructions with adherence to prescribed standards and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned. Reports to the Customer Service Supervisor.
Knowledge: Position requires a working knowledge of routine repair and maintenance methods used in area of responsibility. Position also requires a detailed knowledge of the City’s streets, residential and business meter locations for assigned route.
Skills: Position requires effective oral communication skills. May require the ability to operate a service truck and maintenance power tools. May need skills in the use of materials used in the repair, maintenance and construction of structures in area of assignment. Must have the physical ability to walk long distances over long periods of time and in all types of weather. Requires the knowledge to operate an electronic hand-held computer. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisor, City personnel and the general public. Ability to attend and remain at work regularly and adhere to policies and procedures regarding absenteeism and tardiness.
Education: High School graduate or GED
Experience: A minimum of one year related experience in an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
