    In this exciting role as a Sr. Principal Microbiologist, you will be recognized as a leader and an expert in the area of sterilization and associated systems for medical devices including sterilization validations and microbiology.  This technical leader will drive corporate and platform wide sterilization and microbiology systems improvement, ensure sterilization requirements and practices are in full compliance to national and international standards.

    This role implements common systems (SOPs, WIs) across businesses to achieve robust validation methods and effective monitoring.  Solid understanding of different types of sterilization methods (EO, gamma, electron beam, steam, etc.) including processes and equipment, assuring timely accurate and independent evaluation of product performance and compliance to sterilization and microbiology requirements prior to clinical studies or market release.  The Sr. Principal Microbiologist  primarily supports Medtronic manufacturing sites but also supports New Product Development.

    A Day in the Life

    • Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
    • Leadership and Talent Management:  Frequently provides guidance, coaching and training to other employees.  Typically manages large, moderately complex initiatives of strategic importance to the enterprise, involving large cross-functional teams, requiring delegation to work and review of others’ work product.
    • Develops strategy for protocols and regulations to sterilize, clean, store, and/or deliver products, supplies, and/or instruments.
    • Supervises the analysis of or microbiological products, raw materials, in-process materials, release test samples or stability samples in support of the product release.
    • Significant experience with implementation of sterilization systems from installation (IQ, OQ, PQ), R&D process development, and release to production.
    • Oversees the development, validation, and implementation of controlled environment methods. 
    • Significant experience determining process parameters to optimize sterilization cycles.
    • Communication and Influence:  Interacts with internal and external customers and vendors at various levels, including executive leadership, on significant matters. 
    • Works directly with OU business leaders, R&D, regulatory affairs, and manufacturing sites to identify solve microbiological or sterilization related issues.
    • Experience working with Regulatory affairs and/or external Regulatory bodies in support of device submissions.

    Must Have: Minimum Requirement

    • Bachelor’s degree required
    • Requires a University Degree and minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.


    Nice to Have

    • Medical Device Industry experience
    • Knowledgeable and experience in sterilization methods including but not limited to ISO 11135 (Ethylene Oxide), ISO 14160 (Liquid Chemical), ISO 17665 (Moist Heat), ISO 11137 (Radiation), ISO 14644 series and microbiological test methods such as Endotoxin, Bioburden, and Sterility.
    • Familiar with these regulations: FDA 21 CFR Part 820 cGMP, ISO 13485, ISO 10012, and ISO 17025.
    • Expertise in microbiological identification methods.
    • Proficient in Math skills, especially in Microbiology / Sterilization Science math formulas and calculations, and statistical techniques
    • Manufacturing and/or Quality experience working in a regulated industry.
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) and Windows OS.
    • Computer literate with focus on LIMS, Excel, Word, Power Point and Project
    • Strong leadership skill
    • Strong presentation skills
    • Project management experience.
    • Strong cGMP skills and knowledge of good documentation practices.
    • Good written and verbal communication skills, communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
    • Knowledge of laboratory safety

    The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
