    Job Summary:

    The Mine Engineer is responsible for all GPS surveying pertaining to mining activities, typically including ore inventory, grade control, pit design, and blast patterns. This position relies heavily on the use of GPS surveying equipment and fluency with computer software for mine and grade control functions. Communication and management of mining personal pertaining to designs is also required. The Mine Engineer oversees environmental sampling and monitoring pertinent to business needs. The Mine Engineer is responsible for ore reconciliation for stockpiles and in-pit reserves. These duties are subject to change based upon business needs and must be completed with a high regard to safety, cost, and timeliness.

     

    Compensation: $80k-90k per year

     

    Responsibilities

    • Manages ore grade control activities at the mines by helping to coordinate blast pattern layout, GPS surveys of shot patterns, management of test data, plotting test data on bench maps, coordinating selective mining of ore, and completing ore pattern reconciliation.
    • Interfaces with corporate technical services to ensure samples are screened for mineralogical purity prior to mining in-place ore.
    • Conducts surveys using GPS equipment for mine control purposes. Stakes engineered designs of pits, roads, dumps, and other mine facilities in the field according to the latest mine plan. Surveys mine floor elevations to aid blast hole drilling, and shovel excavations of the pit to the target design.
    • Monthly topographic surveys of the pits and dumps are made to update progress maps, and to determine volumes mined. Maintains current pit and dump progress maps using Microsoft Excel, Trimble Geomatics Office (TGO), Trimble Business Center (TBC), and Maptek Vulcan software packages.
    • Surveys ore stockpiles on a monthly basis, reports the results, and helps to reconcile physical inventory with calculated inventories.
    • Monitors slope movements using GPS or other monitoring methods, and manages and reports movement data.
    • Enters mine production and ore haulage data into the appropriate databases and creates various routine and custom reports. Reports month end mine production, labor statistics, fuel consumption, and other information as requested.
    • Manages sampling of water discharge, flow monitoring, and air quality for environmental reporting purposes.
    • Assists with start-up of operations at the beginning of shift and helps coordinate non-routine task work. Promotes non-routine task risk reduction analyses.
    • Acts as resource and champion for site continuous improvement activities (Suggestion Program, 5S, Kaizen, TPM, problem solving, etc.)
    • Communicates and supervises mine team, as dictated by business needs.

    Other Duties & Responsibilities:

    The Mine Engineer role requires a large amount of communication, data interpretation, and leadership skills in order to coordinate the efficient, safe mining from the mine plan/model to the mine team.

     

    Other duties and responsibilities arise to meet business needs within scope of Mine Engineer’s role and responsibilities.

     

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    The Mine Engineer assists with supervision of drilling operations, ore mining activities, and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable rules.  Responsibilities include team input for short & intermediate term ore extraction strategies, assistance with short term mine planning, appraising performance, rewarding employees, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.

     

     

    *This is considered a safety sensitive position, therefore will be subject to random drug testing as required. 

    Qualifications

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Knowledge of the English language and advanced computer skills is also required. 

     

    While performing the duties of this job, the Mine Engineer is typically required to have the ability to operate, monitor, and adjust equipment, including commercial motor vehicles, have manual dexterity, use repetitive motions, regularly sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, squat, climb and twist, select and use appropriate equipment/tools to accomplish job duties. The Mine Engineer must be able to read, write, listen, speak and understand English, follow all instructions and other oral/written information, visually inspect equipment/work area, complete paperwork and other documentation accurately. Ability to instruct/transfer job information/knowledge to others as well as infrequently lift up to 100 pounds is preferred.

     

    Being under minimal supervision, the Mine Engineer is expected to be self-directed, take initiative and be persistent when appropriate to accomplish necessary duties and keep busy without prompting from the supervisor.  Additionally, the employee is expected to be adaptable to changing work assignments, coordinate with others, and learn and memorize procedures. In order to do so, the technician must have a high level of integrity, dependability and self control to maintain composure, prioritize work, manage time effectively and efficiently, meet established deadlines, display a cooperative attitude, read, understand and follow all company, job specific/safety policies/procedures, and attend/use all required training.

     

    Education: Minimum of a B.S degree from accredited institution in relevant engineering field such as, but not limited to Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geology.

     

    Licensing: A valid driver’s license is required.

     

    Experience: Prior experience is not required.  However, it is preferred.

     

    Work Hours: Must have ability to work the shift/number of hours in which duties need to be accomplished, including overtime, holidays and weekends, as necessary.  Call-ins may occur as needed.

     

    Working Conditions: While Barretts Minerals Inc. provides safe working conditions within all rules, regulations, and policies set forth by governing agencies as well as stricter internal guidelines, technicians are sometimes exposed to demanding conditions. Some duties are completed outside, so technicians may be exposed to weather related conditions including heat/cold, poor lighting conditions, wind, dust, and precipitation events.

     

    Safety Equipment: Safety equipment typically required while performing the duties of this job include a personal lockout/tagout lock, ANSI approved hardhat and safety glasses with sideshields, and safety shoes/boots with steel toe protection.  Hearing protection is required for certain tasks.  Additionally, harness and lanyard are required when working at heights. Additional personal protective equipment is available for use if a situation arises where it becomes required or if it is simply desired by the technician.

     

    Safety Training: A new employee hired to perform the duties of this position is to be provided New Employee Training by a qualified individual, which consists of eight hours of classroom training and 16 hours of on the job training.  It will include, but is not limited to, the following: forklift/mobile

    equipment operation and certification/licensing, hazard communication, hearing conservation, respiratory protection, electrical safety, lock out/tag out, personal protective equipment, blood borne pathogens, fire fighting/extinguishers, machine safety, confined spaces, reporting of hazardous conditions, accidents, injuries, near-miss and property damage incidents, evacuation/emergency procedures, first aid, back injury prevention, and job/work area procedures. 

     

    Upon transferring to perform the duties of this position for the first time, an employee is to be provided New Task Training by a qualified individual until the employee adequately understands the contents of the training, which include job/work area procedures and related topics.  Additionally, an employee must be provided further training if a job duty/task has changes that will affect the health and safety aspects of that employee’s position.

     

    Additional refresher safety training may be required as management deems appropriate or as dictated by MSHA/OSHA regulations.

     

    Language Skills: The Mine Engineer must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Also required is the ability to write reports, business correspondence, procedure manuals and to effectively present information or respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and customers.

     

    Reasoning Ability: The Mine Engineer must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions as well as interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Also required is the ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
