Prescription Eyeglass Maker

  • Duties

    • Performs work on a rotating basis in all phases of the Surfacing Section, optical Fabrication Laboratory, where single vision and multi-focal spectacles are fabricated and/or repaired on a production line basis.
    • Transposes or interprets spectacle prescriptions, showing patient measurements and eyeglass specifications such as pupillary distance, temple length, eye size, cylinder power and sphere power, axis and similar data.
    • Centers lens blank in an automatic blocking unit and adheres blank to block with metal alloy; places blocked lens in a lens generator; and sets dials to rough cut the desired cylinder, sphere curves, and thickness.
    • Performs work involved in the checking of spectacles for flaws and conformance to prescription specifications, in the edging of spectacle lenses, and the assembly of spectacles.
    • Receives single vision lenses / stock bifocals from stock or the Surfacing Section on which cylindrical and/or spherical curves have been previously ground, accompanied by a prescription which shows patient measurements and eyeglass specifications.
    • Centers lens blank in automatic blocking unit and adheres blank to metal alloy block.
    • Under supervision makes checks of a wide variety of finished spectacles for possible flaws or faulty workmanship.

    Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Prescription Eyeglass Maker~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common tasks including using various hand tools, such as lens gauge, caliper, small wrenches, and screwdrivers in order to make mechanical adjustments and visual checks. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

    • Physical Effort: A small portion of the time is spent sitting at a desk or bench located in the laboratory, while preponderance of time is spent standing or walking on a cement floor. Work requires handling of light objects (not over ten pounds) and intermittent muscular exertion when manipulating light tools and machine controls. Close hand and eye coordination is required in checking lenses for flaws
    • Working Conditions: Work is performed inside a well lighted, heated, and ventilated laboratory. workers are regularly subject to constant noise from running equipment, lens grinding, and laboratory operations. When hand grinding spherical surfaces, workers are required to keep hands in moist abrasives, and some personal danger exists from working around equipment with moving parts, molten alloy, or working with an occasional knife edge and broken lens. Hands are subject to minor cuts, bruises, or abrasions.
