General Summary
The Monitor Technician (MT) works under the direction of the Manager/Director of Cardiology Services. Is responsible for monitoring EKG waveforms and other physiological parameters and the application of monitoring electrodes. Communicates patient information to physicians and nurses in an effective and efficient manner. Compiles patient data and prepares reports on a shift-by-shift basis utilizing appropriate computer reports. In addition, cares for monitoring equipment, restocks strip chart paper and any other material needed for the complete operation of the central monitoring console.
Minimum Knowledge and Skills, Etc.
1. High school diploma or equivalent is required.
2. Requires the completion of an EKG Class and EKG Testing. Must minimally achieve an 84% on the EKG test.
3. Generally requires two (2) weeks of orientation and successful passing of above EKG Class and Test in order to function independently.
4. Communication skills (written, verbal and non-verbal) necessary in order to relate well with people of varying backgrounds including patients, families and staff.
5. Must be able to read, write and perform simple mathematical computations.
6. Must possess current CPR Certification or the ability to become certified in CPR within 30 days of hire.
Working Conditions
1. Normal patient care environment with little exposure to noise, dust, temperature, and the like.
2. Minimal exposure to communicable diseases and certain distasteful patient care activities.
3. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail.
4. Possible fatigue and eye strain from continuously using eyesight while reading monitors and recording.
5. Ability to work independently and productively in quiet and enclosed environment.
