Overview
The Monitor Technician is a member of the patient care team who functions under the supervision of the Registered Professional Nurse. The responsibilities of the Monitor Technician include interpreting heart rhythms, noting irregularities in electronic medical records, ensuring that heart monitors are functioning correctly, and reporting to the medical staff in charge of the patients. Under supervision the Monitor Technician is responsible for the placement and scanning of Holter and event monitors, analysis of ECG rhythms and documentation. Monitor Technician may handle medication that is delivered by the Pharmacy either directly or via the pneumatic tube system and to transport the medication to an appropriate storage area or to another employee who is qualified to administer medication. Successful Monitor Technicians should have excellent analytical and technical skills, detail-oriented, as well as adaptability to change based on evidence-based practice. Ultimately, top performers should have a strong working knowledge of medical equipment and software, as well as good communication skills when interacting with patients and care staff.
Responsibilities
Observing and interpreting patients heart monitor and checking for abnormalities, including irregular heart rhythm, arrhythmias, and cardiac arrest
Recognizing and responding to any abnormal conditions in patients heart rhythm
Performing and reporting any changes in heart readings or EKGs to Coworkers, Nurses and Physicians caring for patients
Updating patients medical records with important information related to cardiac rhythms which promote treatment plan by attending physicians
Identities own knowledge deficits and promptly seeks resources to meet those needs while promoting safe patient care
Demonstrates the necessary knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to the age spiritual and cultural needs of the patient served
Maintains knowledge of the technological advances required for the role associated with equipment computers and software
Participates in positive outcomes related to designated procedure
Precepts others to job role when applicable
Performs accurate monitoring of patients related to selected procedures
Cleaning and maintaining heart monitors and EKG machines
Reporting any necessary equipment repairs in a timely manner
Assisting with the training of new staff in medical monitoring systems
Work as the running for changing lead wires, patches, batteries, and any task needed to ensure patients remains visible on cardiac monitor
Recognizes and participates in testing quality concerns and implements strategies
Qualifications
Required Education: High school diploma / GED
Required Experience: Ability to work as Lead Monitor Technician after twelve (12) months of training. The ability to remain calm in stressful environments. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Excellent technical skills for hospital equipment and medical software. Great communication and multi-tasking skills
Preferred Experience: One (1) year of previous experience as a Monitor Technician
