COMPENSATION: $20 per hr.
POSITION SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE:
The Discovery Center Museum Technician assembles and maintains technical assets of the Space Foundation Discovery Center. The Discovery Center’s efforts of making the general public aware of the importance of space in our daily lives are of critical importance to our mission. Through technology demonstration, the Discovery Center teaches in a cutting-edge and relevant way. The Discovery Center Museum Technician will play a key role in assisting with the construction and implementation of educational technology designed for visitors of all ages.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following briefly describes representative responsibilities of this job, but it is not intended to be a complete or all-inclusive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities that are required of this position:
- In coordination with members of the Discovery Center team, assist with the design, building, and implementation of exhibits and interactives for visitors of the Discovery Center
- Maintain equipment and hands-on technology components already on display in the Discovery Center
- Looks for ways to improve exhibit functionality and upkeep with increased efficiency
- Assist with the general care and cleanliness of artifacts and displays
- Mounts, installs, and dismounts museum exhibitions, resolving problems of design and installation
- Learn new technologies and pass on the gained knowledge through written and/or verbal instructions
- Use and Maintain 3D printers
- Use and Maintain basic robots
- Work with PCB boards including soldering, ability to describe their basic parts and functions
- Basic coding of mechanical movement of robots
- Basic programming of Raspberry Pi’s or Arduino’s
- May perform other duties as required or assigned.
COMPETENCIES:
The following briefly describes the knowledge, skills, abilities, and characteristics associated with this position, including any required experience, education, licensure, certification, or combination thereof:
- Previous experience with basic computer coding
- Previous experience with basic website programming preferred
- Understanding of basic electronics and circuits
- Familiarity with basic electronic parts, tools, and skills such as soldering, voltmeters, resistors, LEDs, etc.
- Competence in working with hand tools, power tools, and equipment
- Ability to set priorities and meet goals in several areas, simultaneously
- Forward-thinking and proactive
- Ability to create written and/or verbal instructions for training others on new technologies

Individuals in this position will generally work indoors and will have a workspace designated solely for him/her. Necessary office furnishings, equipment, and supplies will be provided by the Foundation. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may periodically be required to work outdoors and would be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The employee may periodically be required to work in an offsite environment or at special events, and from time to time may be asked to travel on Foundation business, at the Foundation’s expense. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
JOB STATUS:
- FLSA Classification: This position is non-exempt according to guidelines of the Fair Labor Standards Act and, as such, an individual in this position is eligible to receive overtime pay.
- Full- or Part-Time: This position is full-time in nature. An individual in this position will work a schedule of up to 40 hours per week. This is a Tuesday – Saturday position.
- Work Location: This position’s primary worksite is the office located in Colorado Springs, CO. The nature and responsibilities of this position are such that it is not eligible for alternative worksite arrangements, such as working from home or telecommuting, on a consistent or recurring basis.*
- Schedule: The usual business days for Space Foundation business offices are Monday through Friday, holidays excepted, and the usual business hours for Space Foundation business offices are from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. in the time zone in which the position is located.* Usual business days/hours for the Space Foundation Discovery Center are: Tuesday – Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. in the time zone in which the position is located.*
