Network Engineer develops and deploys plans and designs of network systems that will meet an organization's requirements for performance, security, and compliance with relevant standards and regulations. Conducts network architecture design, feasibility, and cost studies. Being a Network Engineer defines monitoring, maintenance, expansion, contingency, and recovery plans and strategies to ensure the network is responsive to changes in demand. Troubleshoots network issues and develops appropriate solutions, resources, and deployment processes. Additionally, Network Engineer keeps informed of the latest technologies to enhance knowledge of networking hardware, software, and best practices. May be certified in vendor-specific products. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering or equivalent. Typically reports to a manager. The Network Engineer work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. To be a Network Engineer typically requires 0-2 years of related experience. (Copyright 2024 Salary.com)

    Level I: $2,169.98 - $2,593.33 Biweekly
    Level II: $3,154.35 - $3,769.74 Biweekly

    Examinations:
    Appraisal (Weight 100%):  Will be conducted for the purpose of evaluating the applicant's training, education, experience, interest and personal fitness for the position.  Appraisal can be based on any combination of the following: Investigation, oral exam, and/or rating of the application.

    Should an oral exam be necessary, the oral exam will be weighted 100%. Qualified candidates will be notified of the testing date five days prior to the examination. 

    Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process. 

    Minimum Qualifications / Employment Standards 

    KCERA Network Engineer
    • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree, including 15 semester (25 quarter) units in computer science or management information systems AND one (1) year of paid experience in a complex IT environment utilizing principles and techniques which include system support, troubleshooting and resolution of network problems, and managing or coordinating network technology implementations for a department or organization with increasing levels of complexity; OR Completion of (60) semester (90) quarter units from an accredited college or university with course work in computer science or management information systems AND three (3) years of paid experience in a complex IT environment utilizing principles and techniques which include system support, troubleshooting and resolution of network problems, and managing or coordinating network technology implementations for a department or organization with increasing levels of complexity; OR Five (5) years of paid experience in a complex IT environment utilizing principles and techniques which include system support, troubleshooting and resolution of network problems, and managing or coordinating network technology implementations for a department or organization with increasing levels of complexity.

    KCERA Senior Network Engineer
    • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree, including 15 semester (25 quarter) units in computer science or management information systems AND four (4) years of paid experience in a complex IT environment utilizing principles and techniques which include system support, troubleshooting and resolution of network problems, and managing or coordinating network technology implementations for a department or organization with increasing levels of complexity; OR Completion of (60) semester (90) quarter units from an accredited college or university with course work in computer science or management information systems AND six (6) years of paid experience in a complex IT environment utilizing principles and techniques which include system support, troubleshooting and resolution of network problems, and managing or coordinating network technology implementations for a department or organization with increasing levels of complexity; OR six (6) years of paid experience in a complex IT environment utilizing principles and techniques which include system support, troubleshooting and resolution of network problems, and managing or coordinating network technology implementations for a department or organization with increasing levels of complexity OR three (3) years of experience as a KCERA Network Engineer.

    • Qualifying experience must have been within the last five (5) years.

    Both Levels:

    Applicants must possess the physical capacity to perform all essential tasks.

    Valid California Class "C" Driver's License is required at the time of appointment

    This examination will establish an eligible list from which immediate appointment(s) will be made. Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months, unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission.
