  • Fort Dodge Fiber is seeking a dedicated and experienced Network Engineer to join our team, dedicated to delivering reliable and high-speed connectivity to the residents and businesses of Fort Dodge. This role involves the day-to-day operation, maintenance, design, and management of our network and data centers. Working under the general direction of the Director of Fort Dodge Fiber, you’ll be carrying out tasks that ensure our network infrastructure performs reliably and efficiently, helping to enhance community access to essential digital resources.Essential Functions & Competencies

    • Leads and supervises network operations, ensuring that high levels of customer service and work quality are being maintained in a manner that promotes retail service adoption and a positive public image of Fort Dodge Fiber.
    • Leads the selection of network operations team members in conjunction with the Director, Fort Dodge Fiber Director, the Assistant City Manager, and City’s Human Resources Department. 
    • Plans, organizes, schedules, supervises, and inspects the work of network operations team members so that personnel and equipment are used in the most efficient manner to complete projects, resolve technical issues, and prevent problems in order to maximize customer satisfaction.
    • Fairly and consistently trains, and provides insights to evaluate, network operations staff in a manner that helps the department and City achieve performance goals in a positive, customer-focused culture that continually improves.
    • Assures that all work performed in the unit meets the City’s standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, and efficiency including that work performed is done in accordance with OSHA safety standards and compliant with all City personnel and safety policies.
    • Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with employees, City officials, contractors, customers, and the general public. Working with other City departments as needed, investigates and resolves complaints, issues or questions of the general public or other City departments. Supports activities of the department to assure that appropriate communication and coordination of efforts occurs with other units of the City.
    • Recommends, procures, and purchases appropriate equipment, services, supplies, for the department and monitors innovations and trends in the broadband service industry. Drafts and prepares plans, reports, and documents for presentation to City senior managers, the City Council, citizens and other governmental organizations pertaining to network operations.
    • Develops and adapts policies and procedures specific to the department pertaining to network operations. Identify and recommend solutions for issues and problems, including providing guidance and assistance with system troubleshooting as needed.
    • Oversees, creates, and maintains up to date documentation of the network, detailing configuration and utilizing auxiliary systems such as IPAM and monitoring system maps. 
    • Plans and schedules projects to be performed and coordinates and oversees all work done by service contract providers that support the network and data center infrastructure.
    • Installs, operates, and maintains switches routers and servers.
    • Configures, installs, and maintains network security and monitoring systems (Firewall/IPS/IDS, traffic monitoring, etc.).
    • Completes network capacity planning, performance tuning, troubleshooting and monitoring ensuring system availability, scalability and general system health.
    • Provides technical customer support services to subscribers of commercial and residential communication products, as well as wholesale Internet and phone service providers.
    • Assists in the day-to-day tasks associated with configuring, programing, and troubleshooting the network system, including progress reporting, maintenance and record keeping.
    • Architects, designs, engineers and implements scalable physical and logical network infrastructure solutions by researching new products and technologies and providing recommendations and justifications for their use. Attends workshops and training seminars to maintain up-to-date knowledge of various products, materials, procedures and equipment used in the performance of duties. Leads work with contractors and vendors to develop new optical/RF/TDM solutions and influence the future of networking and its associated infrastructure.
    • Responds to after-hours emergencies (24/7). 
    Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in Network Design, Computer Engineering or a related field; or equivalent, relevant industry experience.
    • Three (3 ) years of relevant networking industry experience operating IP networks with end-user interaction. Relevant job experience in the field; telecommunications engineering, data center management and/or carrier or service provider environments will be considered in place of degree or designation.
    • Demonstration of having a thorough knowledge and understanding of the OSI network model, Ethernet networks and associated hardware platforms; and their implementations in the data center space. Experience network switching and routing, including implementation and troubleshooting of advanced routing protocols such as OSPF, & BGP, ect. Familiarity with IPv6 concepts.
    • Must maintain residency within fifteen (15) miles of the corporate limits of Fort Dodge.  Residency to be established within 60 days of placement. Valid Iowa driver’s license.  Must meet the requirements of the City’s motor vehicle policy.  Must be insurable and maintain insurability.
    • Must be able to effectively communicate (orally in person and over the telephone and in writing using electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, businesses and community members.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • CCNP-SP or similar vendor certificate, or comparable work experience in related field with a Project Management certification or experience as a project manager.
    • Experience troubleshooting complex network issues and network security systems; advanced troubleshooting of networking hardware such as Calix, Cisco, Nokia, Adtran and Wide Area Networking (DIA, Metro Ethernet, MPLS).
    • Knowledge and experience with fiber optic network components and testing methods.
    • Familiarity with virtual routing concepts.
    • Knowledge of monitoring and trending technologies including SNMP and Netflow/IPFIX.
    • Linux/Unix Systems administration experience.
    • Database administration experience.
    • Virtualized compute environment (vmware, kvm, hyperV) experience.
    • IPv6 implementation experience.
    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the OSI network model, Ethernet networks and associated hardware platforms; and their implementations in the datacenter space including familiarity with IPv6 concepts.
    • Demonstrated ability to plan, establish, and adjust complex working procedures and methods in a networking or broadband utility, including directing the work of others to accomplish goals and objectives.
    • Strong knowledge of general FTTx operating and maintenance processes and procedures, information technologies, office and operating system software, and facility management.
    • Ability to anticipate, analyze, make decisions and systematically take action to solve complex problems using resourcefulness, tact, and sound judgment.
    • Ability to perform professional work and research to process complex information and make reliable recommendations to senior-level management.
    • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions.
    • Strong ability to prioritize work and meet critical deadlines, taking appropriate initiative to complete duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.
    • Interpersonal communication skills necessary to successfully interacting with retail service customers and staff in a positive and effective manner, including conflict resolution skills, using tact, social perceptiveness, patience and courtesy.
    • Ability to plan and manage information technology system upgrades.
    • Knowledge and experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions, be able to answer questions and resolve problems.
    • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions.
    • Effective written and oral communication skills for technical report writing and individual interactions. 
    • Aptitude to clearly explain or to assist with the explanation of technical issues to non-technicians.
    • Ability to foster a spirit of teamwork and support when interacting with staff and others.
    • General knowledge of alternative scalable physical and logical network infrastructure solutions and the ability to research and implement effective new products and technologies.
