  • JOB SUMMARY:

    Under the supervision of the Operations Manager, the Network Engineer is responsible for all engineering functions related to the Data Center.  This role focuses on and facilitates, but is not limited to, designing, planning, implementing transport and access systems. Responsibilities extend to development, purchases, and writing plans for all data center equipment installations and remote (carrier) cabinets. The assignment of equipment ports and fiber(s) for telecom circuitry.

    Additional engineering is performed for outside of plant access equipment, including determining budget bandwidths for access nodes and geographical regions within the Range network. This role has the responsibilities of monitoring network systems, maintaining facility records, and serving as a project manager, maintaining, and reporting on related department projects status and completion status (schedule, budget, and standards). Has a high level of autonomy to perform assigned functions, responsible for industry and policy compliance, including confidentiality. Work-related travel is required to be successful in this role.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS:

    • Coordinate discussions with management on the network's status, plans for development, and maintenance. This includes a review of the system’s budget, and other demands, such as the data center’s maintenance.
    • Department / Regional Projects: Perform project management functions focused on:
      1. Data Center/ Access related projects, to include plans, designs, coordinate, and support through the implementation.
      2. Design Layout Records (DLR): Material quotes, orders, and timelines.
      3. Coordination and scheduling with staff, across assigned projects as appropriate and necessary.
      4. Cutsheets: Assist assignment with Inside Facility Record development.
      5. Records: Complete, maintain and file accordingly all work orders and project closeouts.
    • Corporate Projects: Perform project management functions focused on:
      1. Collaborate with other Network/Optical Engineers, on plans, designs, and the implementation of:
        1. High-level Transport and Optical Transport Equipment Trials
        2. New Installations
    • Augments and system/network modifications.
    1. System Decommissions.
    • Perform design and engineering work on the data center equipment, to include but not limited to:
      1. Connections for existing network, and customers (appropriate use of space, power, and interconnection).
      2. Updates to existing equipment, rearrangements, augments, and new installations, keeping in mind future expansion in their decisions.
      3. Perform circuit design functions, the assignment of equipment ports, fiber assignments, and traffic routing.
      4. Maintain and document the design layout records (DLR) to include project efforts and equipment investments. Maintain and file records appropriately.
    • Responsible for project design, purchasing, and vendor management. Ensures all associated project materials are accounted for prior to work being performed. 
    • Day to Day Operational Tasks:
      1. Attend and professionally participate in
        1. Corporation meetings (CAB, Corporate Team meetings, etc.)
        2. External and Vendor meetings
      2. Plan, estimate and draft project estimates and budget expectations.
      3. Perform site visits and inspect equipment and network operations.
      4. Verify work performed, and plan for upcoming project related work requirements.
      5. communicate and discuss plans and project updates with the Operations Manager.
    • Provide technical support and training opportunities on new and existing technologies to the technicians.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION): (A combination of demonstrable years’ experience and applicable alternative training(s) may be considered in lieu of the following qualifications).

    1. Successful completion of a 4-year / bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, or a similarly related field of study.
      1. Or 6 years of successful work experience in network engineering and communications functions.
    2. A minimum of 5 years of work experience performing communications and/or network engineering related functions.
    3. A valid, state issued, and insurable drivers’ license.

     

    COMPETENCIES OR KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA’S):

    • Electrical and Network Engineering Related Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of theories, concepts and practices and ability to use them in complex, difficult and/or unprecedented situations.
      1. Data Networking Concepts: An advanced level of knowledge of TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol) required and expertise with routing protocols for design and the turn-up of networking and communication equipment.
    • TDM / ATM (Time-Division Multiplexing / Asynchronous Transfer Mode) Networking Concepts: Advanced knowledge of telecom standards and equipment are required to perform daily functions as a Network Engineer. These are needed for planning and implementation of telecom equipment, services, and products.
    • Attention to Detail: Successful performance requires being careful about detail and thorough in completing work tasks.
    • Analytical Skills: An advanced capability and skill with observing and assessing a situation and determining how to respond in a prompt and professional manner. Applies highly proficient and specialized skills that allow employee to function in situations that are varied, complex, and/or non-routine. Must be able to see patterns and trends and draw conclusion from observations across various situations.
    • Project Management Skills: At an advanced level, be proficient with organizing the planning process. Develop and direct detailed project schedules including tasks, accountabilities, and deadlines. Anticipate problems that may impede work.  Communicates changes and progress.
    • Computer / Technical Skills: At an intermediate level, be proficient with word processing and data entry tools and develop spreadsheets and presentations efficiently. Creates moderate to complex network diagrams and documentation records. Intermediate configuration of equipment.  Delivers advanced spreadsheet analyses and may generate graphics.  Conducts advanced level of systems analyses and troubleshoots issues.
    • Administrative / General Office Equipment Operation: Efficiently use common office equipment (computer, digital camera, scanner, fax machine, copier, phone).
    • Confidentiality: Daily, maintain company / customer / vendor information and sensitive business matters private when facing a wide range of circumstances. Be knowledgeable of who are the authorized key contacts for disclosure of and who to communicate with regarding restricted information.
    • Time Management: Requires the ability to use one's work time effectively and productively,
    • Customer and Personal Service: Working knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
    • Office / Administrative Support: Skilled and knowledgeable at an intermediate level with drafting, editing, proofreading internal and external correspondence. Understand thoroughly and directs organized department data and file organization.  Perform data entry accurately.  Schedule meetings/ appointments and maintain calendar(s) as appropriate.
    • Decision Making: Decisions have major implications on the management and operations of an area within a department. Job may contribute to important strategy, operational and business decisions that affect the department.
    • Problem Solving: Problems are highly varied, complex and often non-recurring; require novel and creative approaches to resolution. New concepts and approaches may have to be developed.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

    This role performs assigned work duties within a general office environment. Employees may be occasionally exposed to changing weather conditions or contaminants.  Other functions and demands, include the following:

    1. Sitting / standing at an office desk for up to 8 hours / day, or longer depending on the demands of the job.
    2. This role is generally performing work functions in indoor work settings and is usually protected from weather conditions during performance of job functions.
    3. Frequent use of technology, computers, devices, keyboards, etc. (Repetitive hand motion and typing like functions).
    4. Hearing, listening, talking, standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, kneeling, squatting, balancing, pushing/pulling, and climbing stairs are all expectations of this role, although some of these functions may be more seldom performed than others.
    5. Must follow all company safety policies / procedures, and always use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
    6. Must be able to lift 50 pounds at times.
    7. Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities.
