Network Engineer develops and deploys plans and designs of network systems that will meet an organization's requirements for performance, security, and compliance with relevant standards and regulations. Conducts network architecture design, feasibility, and cost studies. Being a Network Engineer defines monitoring, maintenance, expansion, contingency, and recovery plans and strategies to ensure the network is responsive to changes in demand. Troubleshoots network issues and develops appropriate solutions, resources, and deployment processes. Additionally, Network Engineer keeps informed of the latest technologies to enhance knowledge of networking hardware, software, and best practices. May be certified in vendor-specific products. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering or equivalent. Typically reports to a manager. The Network Engineer work is closely managed.     The Department of Internal Services is offering an exciting career opportunity for an experience professional interested in a career as a Network Systems Engineer I within the Systems Team.

    The Network Systems Engineer I - Systems will perform a broad range of duties to include diagnose, analyze, repair, maintain, and install enterprise-level network, server, and storage in physical and virtual systems. 
    Experience with Redhat Linux, Ubuntu Linux, or AIX administration is highly desired.

    Positions in this classification are in Medical Group I - Light Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require only light physical effort and may include lifting of small, light objects and some bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching. Considerable walking or standing may be involved.

    Experience: Four (4) years of full-time, paid work experience using Linux and/or AIX operating systems to design, build, maintain, and administer enterprise level data or enterprise level systems.

     

    Substitution: Possession of a valid professional or expert level certification from CompTIA, Microsoft, Cisco, or VMware in networking, server administration, virtualization, or a closely related field may substitute for two (2) years of required experience.
     
    License: Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent, may be required.

    SELECTION PROCESS:

    • Certification Without Examination - In instances where the number of eligible candidates is less than or equal to the number of qualified applicants the Department is entitled to receive under Personnel Rule 4212, the competitive examination process will be waived and the names will be certified without an examination.
    • Written Examination - If required, the examination will be offered in an online format. Please indicate on the supplemental questionnaire if you have the ability to complete an online examination.

    Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list, effective for a minimum of 3 months (may be extended up to 12 months) and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.
