Network Engineering Director plans, designs, and develops all aspects of network systems that will meet an organization's requirements for performance, security, and compliance with relevant standards and regulations. Identifies network requirements for hardware, software, and services that will provide optimal solutions and meet the capacity requirement for the organization. Being a Network Engineering Director directs network architecture design, feasibility, and cost studies. Develops monitoring, maintenance, expansion, contingency, and recovery plans and strategies to ensure the network is responsive to changes in demand. Additionally, Network Engineering Director keeps abreast with the latest technologies and best practices and utilizes vendors and providers to provide additional resources to support networks. Usually is certified and has deep knowledge of vendor-specific products. Requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering or equivalent. Typically reports to a director. The Network Engineering Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Network Engineering Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience.   • Overview

    Department 448 Network Administration Engineering Team works to design, implement, and maintain network infrastructures to support the design, development, testing and integration of system software for US Navy Nuclear Submarines. These network infrastructures, that are served by the System and Network Administrators, support a variety of engineering teams that develop and maintain a variety of submarine platforms and control systems such as: Ship Control, Combat Weapons Systems, Weapons Stowage and Handling, as well as other specialized embedded safety critical shipboard and database systems, simulators, and land based trainers. The Network Administration Engineering team works to assure that these network infrastructures and the engineering development platforms are up to date and follow the latest in cybersecurity standards.

     

    Specific responsibilities include:

    • Day to day administration of a multi-site Wide Area Network
    • Long term planning for expansion and obsolescence.
    • Working with software developers to provide robust development environments while implementing security controls
    • Support strategy for expansion and obsolescence
    • Interface closely with internal stakeholders

    Qualifications

    Required:

    • High School diploma or equivalent
    • 5 years of relevant experience
    • Internal candidates must be from organiations Outside of Operations (Casciano/Gabriel)

    Preferred:

    • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity or equivalent technical degree
    • Understanding of both DoD (National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual) and NIST 800-53 and/or NIST 800-171 security controls, CompTIA A , Network , Security , CISSP certifications
    • Understanding of networks, DNS, Firewall, IPS, Active Directory
    • Familiar with Containers, networking in containers
    • Familiar with Gitlab, Log360, Tenable, VEEAM, Jazz, WSUS

    Skills

    • Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and writing skills, including the ability to write documentation
    • Highly motivated, with ability to perform independently, as well as interact with other groups and organizations in an engineering environment
    • In-depth knowledge of:
      • Computer network infrastructures
      • Operating systems (Windows, Linux, Solaris)
      • Virtualization technologies (Linux KVM, VMWare, ESXi, or Qemu)
    • Shell scripting (csh, bash, perl)
