Nuclear Medicine Technologist jobs in Lowell, MA

Nuclear Medicine Technologist prepares and administers radiopharmaceuticals for use in both diagnostic studies and therapeutic treatments. Creates and enhances diagnostic images using a variety of imaging equipment and tools. Being a Nuclear Medicine Technologist collects biologic specimens and prepares data for interpretation by physicians. Follows radiation safety guidelines and documents radiopharmaceutical usage for regulatory compliance. Additionally, Nuclear Medicine Technologist may require a bachelor's degree in a related area. Typically requires certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) and a state license to practice. Typically reports to a chief technologist or manager. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role.     Under supervision of the Operations Manager and Team Leader, responsible for the safe use of ionizing and nonionizing radiation and molecular imaging for diagnostic, therapeutic, and research purposes. This includes all documentation, regulatory compliance, patient care, and customer service skills required to complete molecular imaging procedures.

    Job Description:

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:

    Patient Care:
    1)    Verify patient identification per hospital policy.
    2)    Review of procedure order and assigned imaging protocol.
    3)    Review and documentation of patient’s pregnancy and lactation status.
    4)    Evaluation of patient’s medical history.
    5)    Verify that pre-procedure preparation has been completed properly per protocol.
    6)    Screening for study contraindications and interfering conditions with review by a nuclear medicine physician if needed.
    7)    Follow infection control guidelines for the care of patients.
    8)    Explain the procedure to the patient and/or legal guardian. Use an interpreter if needed. Allow time for the patient to ask questions about the procedure.
    9)    Insert and monitor peripheral IV catheter for procedure. 
    10)    Assures and monitors patient comfort during procedures.
    11)    Administers radiopharmaceuticals per procedure protocol.
    12)    Utilizes appropriate technique (acquisition protocol, patient positioning, and image processing) to ensure quality diagnostic images and/or quantitative results.
    13)    Performs image quality control to assess for image artifacts prior to patient release. Repeats images if necessary. Consult with nuclear medicine physician if necessary.
    14)    Administer oral and IV CT contrast as required. Understands the administration and side effects of CT contrast media agents. Assesses patient for contrast allergy and verifies allergy preparation and any existing contraindications prior to the administration of CT contrast. Monitors patient for side effects following contrast administration.
    15)    Recognizes and responds to patient emergencies and adverse events. 
    16)    Provides assistance to patients to complete procedures as needed.
    17)    Coordinates with department staff to maintain an efficient and effective flow of patients in the department. Effectively communicates with patients throughout their procedure.
    18)    Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
    19)    Documents all required procedure information in the dose manager, the electronic medical record (EMR) and PACS.
    20)    Has an understanding of computer systems and image processing. Responsible for the reconstruction and processing of patient images.
    21)    Collaborate with Authorized Users to perform therapeutic procedures.
    22)    Perform therapeutic treatments following the facility Quality Management Program (QMP).
    23)    Follows infection control guidelines for the cleaning of equipment.

    Radiation Safety:
    1)    Uses ALARA techniques to minimize radiation exposure to patients, the general public, other healthcare professionals and oneself. 
    2)    Wears dosimetry badges as required.
    3)    Perform required department radiation surveys and wipe testing.
    4)    Follow state regulations for the receipt, storage, disposal, and usage of all radioactive materials.
    5)    Use radiation protection shielding to reduce radiation exposure.
    6)    Follows radiation safety procedures as documented in the facility Radiation Safety Manual.

    Quality Control:
    1)    Perform and document equipment quality control according to the quality control schedule to ensure the proper function of department instruments and imaging systems.
    2)    Communicate equipment issues with service vendors and/or IT team to troubleshoot department equipment and computer systems.
    3)    Report equipment issues to department management.

    Certifications and License:
    1)    Active ARRT(N) or NMTCB(CNMT) certification required.
    2)    Nuclear Medicine MA DPH Radiation Control Program licensure required.
    3)    ARRT Computed Tomography certification preferred.
    4)    NMTCB(PET) certification, if needed.
    5)    Maintain compliance with continuing education requirements for certification(s) and state licensure.
    6)    American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification
     

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Education:  

    Graduate of an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technology program

    Licensure, Certification, Registration:

    Licensed in Nuclear Medicine Technology by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Health Radiation Control Program

    ARRT(N) or NMTCB(CNMT) certification required

    ARRT(CT) certification preferred

    AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers

    Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

    Experience with PACS, dose management software and electronic medical records.

    Knowledge of standard business PC software applications such as but not limited to MS Office.

    Ability to provide exceptional customer service while interacting with patients, colleagues, and clinical personnel.

    Ability to interact and provide effective communications to patients, colleagues and customers in day to day interactions.   

    Ability to adapt to and work effectively in a hospital environment.
