Nuclear Medicine Technologist jobs in Roanoke, VA

Nuclear Medicine Technologist prepares and administers radiopharmaceuticals for use in both diagnostic studies and therapeutic treatments. Creates and enhances diagnostic images using a variety of imaging equipment and tools. Being a Nuclear Medicine Technologist collects biologic specimens and prepares data for interpretation by physicians. Follows radiation safety guidelines and documents radiopharmaceutical usage for regulatory compliance. Additionally, Nuclear Medicine Technologist may require a bachelor's degree in a related area. Typically requires certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) and a state license to practice. Typically reports to a chief technologist or manager. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role.     Department: Radiology

    The scope of the practice of the nuclear medicine technologist includes but is not limited to the following areas and responsibilities:

     

    Patientcare: requires the exercise of judgement to assess and respond to the patients need prior to, during, and after procedures in the nuclear medicine department. Performs patient assessment and screening within scope of practice. Uses a variety of imaging equipment and understands the capabilities and limitations of each piece of equipment. Uses the image archiving system and maintains an expertise in data and image transfer. Interacts appropriately with patients and all care providers.

     

    Quality Control: Requires the evaluation and maintenance of a quality control program for all instrumentation to ensure its proper performance and stability. Cleans, disinfects, and inspects equipment.

     

    Diagnostic procedures: requires the utilization of appropriate techniques to ensure quality diagnostic images and/or laboratory results.

     

    Radiopharmaceuticals: Involves the procurement and preparation, quality control, dose calibration, identification, documentation, administration, disposal, storage, and safe handling of radioactive material.

     

    Radiation Safety: Educates the public with the practicing techniques that will minimize radiation exposure to the patient, general public and health care personnel consistent.

     

    Nuclear Regulatory Committee: Able to correspond respectfully. Provides diagnostic aid to physicians by conducting organ or body scans to patients. Records and administers isotope dosages in accordance with established departmental protocol.  Observes patients during procedures and reports any abnormal activity. Follows IAC accreditation guidelines and procedures.

     

    Qualifications

    Qualified candidates must posses an American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (AART) or a Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) NMT certification.
