Nurse Practitioner - Neonatal works in collaboration with a physician to assess the physical needs of newborn patients. Provides care for newborns and infants in a neonatal setting. Being a Nurse Practitioner - Neonatal orders, interprets, and records results of clinical tests and reports results to physicians. Prescribes medications and makes recommendations for other therapeutic forms of treatment. Additionally, Nurse Practitioner - Neonatal requires a master's degree. Typically reports to a physician. Requires Certified Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) in specialty area based on RN licensure and state authority for advanced practice.     About our NICUs and NNPs:

    • We are a level IV NICU – the highest level of NICU designation – and our NNP’s provide care at both Children’s Mercy and 8 other level 2 and 3 NICU’s in the metropolitan area.
    • Children’s Mercy NICU was ranked 14th in Neonatology by US News and World Report in 2022
    • Our Elizabeth J. Ferrell Fetal Health Center located in Children’s Mercy provides the most comprehensive and advanced care in this region to mom’s and babies with high-risk pregnancies

    Services provided in the Fetal Health Center include:

    • Diagnosis and testing of fetal conditions including fetal echocardiograms, amniocentesis, and diagnostic ultrasound
    • Fetal Surgery and Intervention
    • Delivery room management and treatment of complex neonatal disorders

    The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) provides expert family-centered and comprehensive health care services to the neonatal patient population (both) in the NICU at Children’s Mercy Adele Hall ​Campus and ​at ​partner metropolitan area NICUs.  In collaboration with other healthcare providers, the NNP provides initial, ongoing, and comprehensive care​.​The NNP obtains a complete health history, performs physical examinations, formulates a plan of care, orders and interprets laboratory and imaging studies, and performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.  The NNP prescribes medications, makes appropriate referrals, collaborates with sub-specialties, and participates in patient/family education. NNPs demonstrate clinical leadership and actively participate in performance improvement activities with emphasis in quality improvement and clinical research. The NNP incorporates best current evidence for delivery of optimal health care that addresses the physiologic, psychosocial, and developmental needs of the patients and families within the framework of the collaborative practice agreement. 

     

    Provides comprehensive health care services to neonatal patient population; obtains health history; performs physical examination; formulates a plan of care; performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; participates in patient/family education. Demonstrates clinical leadership and actively participates in performance improvement activities with emphasis in clinical research.

    Responsibilities

    • Utilizes the nursing process to develop and implement a comprehensive plan of care for the patient/family which promotes optimal patient outcomes.
    • Serves as a clinical resource for the education and consultation needs of the health care team.
    • Meets the educational needs of patient/family, utilizing principles of teaching/learning.

    Qualifications

    • Master's Degree MSN required and 3-5 years experience Neonatal RN experience. Exceptions considered on a case-by-case basis within preferred specialty.
    • Other DNP preferred and 3-5 years experience Neonatal RN experience. Exceptions considered on a case-by-case basis within preferred specialty.
    • One of the following: Licensed RN - MO, Registered Nurse Multistate License Missouri required upon hire
    • One of the following: Licensed RN - Kansas, Registered Nurse Multistate License Kansas required upon hire
    • Certified Neonatal Nurse Practitioner
    • RN Compact license for all states besides KS and MO
    • Current Neonatal Nurse Practitioner certification Required Upon Hire
    • Refer to Nursing and Advanced Practice Provider Licensure and Certification policy for required Life Support Certifications Required Upon Hire
    • Specialty Certification relevant to unit’s patient population (determined by Nurse Manager/Director) Preferred
    • APRN board certification congruent with population and practice setting (see policy statement: Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Roles and Practice Setting) Required Upon Hire

    Remote Work/Work from Home

    This position is not eligible work remotely, which means that the person hired will be required to work onsite at one of our Children’s Mercy locations and may not work from home.
