Nurse Practitioner - Neonatal works in collaboration with a physician to assess the physical needs of newborn patients. Provides care for newborns and infants in a neonatal setting. Being a Nurse Practitioner - Neonatal orders, interprets, and records results of clinical tests and reports results to physicians. Prescribes medications and makes recommendations for other therapeutic forms of treatment. Additionally, Nurse Practitioner - Neonatal requires a master's degree. Typically reports to a physician. Requires Certified Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) in specialty area based on RN licensure and state authority for advanced practice.     Position Summary:

    • Reports to the Medical Director and Director of Nursing of the Comprehensive Care Center
    • The registered nurse practitioner is a licensed, certified, masters-prepared professional responsible for the independent, but physician supervised, delivery of patient care, utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation, consistent with the NP’s education and experience.

    • Demonstrate Respect, Professionalism and Courtesy to all patients, visitors, other providers and coworkers, as delineated in the LVMC “Commitment to Care”.
    • Constantly use C-I-CARE principles when communicating with others
    • Demonstrate commitment to the quality philosophy and values of Lompoc Healthcare District by maintaining established policies and procedures, organizational objectives, continuous quality improvement, quality assessment and safety standards
    • Participate in performance Improvement Activities
    • Participate in professional Development

    Position Duties/Responsibility:      

    • Performs patient assessments, medication review and resident and family education
    • Instructs, educates and counsels residents regarding matters relating to their physical and mental health/disease management
    • Recognizes and evaluates situations that require the attention of the supervising physician and communicates his/her assessments with that physician to facilitate the care of the patient and transfer of the patient’s care
    • Provides on-site evaluation, treatment and coordination of care  
    • Performs any other duties or responsibilities assigned
    • Participates in continuous quality improvement activities relating to his/her practice

    Essential Functions:

    • Performs tasks or functions which fall within the customary scope of the advanced practice of nursing.   
    • Provides medical functions as identified by Standardized Procedures and approved Protocols, consistent with the scope of practice outlined by the California Nurse Practice Act
    • Works in collaboration with and under the direction of supervising physician(s)
    • Ability to function unsupervised
    • Ability to work as a Team
    • Ability to have positive personal interactions with co-workers, patients and their families

    Position Qualifications:

    • Education:  1) Graduation from a master’s program in nursing accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the National League for Nursing (NLN); 2) Completion of a formal post-graduate nurse practitioner track or program in the applicant’s specialty within a school of nursing granting graduate level academic credit; 3) Eligibility or successful completion of the national certifying examination administered by a nationally recognized credentialing organization in the appropriate specialty.
    • License: Current California license as a Registered Nurse and certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the California Board of Registered Nursing
    • Certification:  Current BLS, ACLS, DEA certification required.  BLS, ACLS required from the American Heart Association.
    • Skills/Ability: The Nurse Practitioner must demonstrate current experience and competence in performing the procedures and tasks appropriate to his/her license and education.  Contacts include residents, families, physicians, nurses and other staff.
    • Experience:  Demonstrated competence and adequate volume of experience: minimum of 425 hours of practice in the past 12 months, 850 hours in the past 24 months or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program in the past 12 months.
    • Renewal of privileges: Current demonstrated competence and an adequate volume of experience (patient encounters for at least 20 patients with acceptable outcomes), reflective of the scope of privileges requested, for the past 24 months based on the results of ongoing evaluation.  Evidence of current physical and mental ability to perform privileges requested.
