Nursing Director administers the nursing program in a hospital, nursing home, or other medical facility to maintain standards of patient care. Advises medical staff, department heads, and administrators in matters related to nursing service. Being a Nursing Director recommends establishment or revision of policies and develops organizational structure and standards of performance. Interprets policies and objectives of nursing service to staff and community groups. Additionally, Nursing Director requires an advanced degree of nursing. Typically reports to top management. Requires RN license. The Nursing Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget.     Job Title: Nursing Director     

    Reports to: Executive Director      

    Department: Health Center

    Hours: 40 hrs/week

    Compensation: DOE


    Oversee the medical operations of Telos U.  Responsible for care for medical emergencies and for the general medical needs of the students.  Responsible for medication ordering and preparation for Telos U students. All Telos MA staff and staff pending nursing licensure will work under the guidance and professional license of the Nursing Director.


    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Hire, train, evaluate, reward, and discipline medical assistants. 
    • Attend weekly Leadership Meetings.
    • Respond to parent inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
    • Respond to reports of pain or sickness as they arise and assess the student.
    • Determine when a student is to be placed on sick bed due to illness or pain. 
    • Provide teaching or guidance for staff on how to care for sick students. 
    • Assess sick students daily.
    • Responsible for COVID testing and managing quarantine if necessary.
    • Assist in scheduling student medical appointments; assist in communicating findings to the student’s parents.
    • Monitor vital signs and weight of students and report issues to the medical director.
    • Accurately dispense student medications and record it in the Medication Administration Record.
    • Count and track narcotics every day.
    • Train select Student Living staff in medication administration and documentation in the MAR.
    • Maintain records of certified staff.
    • Coordinate with the pharmacy and labs.
    • Maintain record of when students are due for routine medical and dental visits, immunizations, and lab work.
    • Administer, read, and record Tuberculosis tests.
    • Perform urine drug screening for staff and students.
    • Communicate any pertinent medical information to the Treatment Team and the Director of Psychiatry either verbally or in written form.
    • Manage Psychiatrist’s schedule. 
    • Monitor for efficacy/side effects of med changes and report to Psychiatrist.
    • Medication management, ordering refills in a timely manner.
    • Report to the Executive Director and call for assistance outside your scope of practice.
    • On Call after hours.
    • Admission assessments and medication set up in the MAR for all new students.
    • Communication with other departments of any necessary info regarding student’s medications, etc.
    • Maintain records for infection control reports, fridge temps, students and staff illness, etc.
    • Receive new orders from medical providers.
    • Use a personal car as needed to run errands for prescription pick-up, supplies, etc.
    • Maintain records for the nursing budget.
    • Prepare and maintain medical files and any applicable records for JOINT Commission audits. 
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Requirements

    Qualifications:

    • Requires a current LPN or RN, driver license, and current CPR certification.  
    • Nursing work experience is preferred but not required
    • Psychiatric Nursing work experience is preferred but not required.
    • Knowledge of standard medical terminology and technique.
    • Knowledge of legal charting procedure and requirements.
    • Knowledge of medications and of Telos U’s procedure for medication administration.
    • Knowledge of company policies and practices.
    • Skill in using nursing tools and equipment (e.g., needles, thermometers, diagnostic tests, stethoscope, blood pressure cuffs, etc.)
    • Skill in assessing the physical condition of the students.
    • Skill in communicating medical situations accurately to students, parents, and co-workers.
    • Ability to use word processing software and to navigate the local network.
    • Ability to check vital signs.
