Nursing Director administers the nursing program in a hospital, nursing home, or other medical facility to maintain standards of patient care. Advises medical staff, department heads, and administrators in matters related to nursing service. Being a Nursing Director recommends establishment or revision of policies and develops organizational structure and standards of performance. Interprets policies and objectives of nursing service to staff and community groups. Additionally, Nursing Director requires an advanced degree of nursing. Typically reports to top management. Requires RN license. The Nursing Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Nursing Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments. Promotes working relationships with outside agencies and with departments within the facility. Assists is maintaining department budget, personnel qualification requirements, maintains procedure manuals, initiates in-service programs, record and reporting systems, and tracking and trending systems. Initiates studies to evaluate effectiveness of nursing service in relation to their objectives and costs.

    Essential Functions:

    • Responsible for all nursing service and its administration and clinical supervision
    • Responsible for the implementation of nursing objectives, standards of nursing care, nursing policy and procedure manual, and reviews and revises such as necessary and at least annually
    • Interprets all nursing policies and procedures to nursing personnel. Determines that nursing care standards and nursing policies and procedures are being followed according to written guidelines
    • Supervises and gives clinical guidance to nurses and other nursing staff (RN, LPN, CMT, and C.N.A)
    • Makes rounds to assess resident and staffing needs and visits residents daily
    • Works under direction of facility administrator to assure that all nursing personnel complete the required orientation and attend the necessary in-service training, and that appropriate documentation is maintained
    • Assures that assessments are completed and documented as needed, that families and physicians are notified, and proper orders are obtained and implemented.
    • Responsible for supervising hygiene of residents
    • Responsible for assuring written documents such as admission assessments, nursing notes, and care plans are kept current in record system per state and federal guidelines
    • Responsible for assisting administrator in keeping facility standards up to state and federal guidelines and assisting with all inspections.
    • Responsible for determining that the medication system meets the needs of the resident, is an effective type administration system, and is set up according to state and federal regulations and pharmaceutical guidelines
    • Keeps administrator informed of significant changes in resident condition, transfer of residents to the hospital, expirations and any other pertinent information regarding residents or employees.
    • Assists in determining the type of residents to be admitted to the facility using established nursing care criteria as a guideline
    • Communicates with administrator and schedules and conducts nursing staff meetings and maintains records of these meetings
    • Assesses supply and equipment needs for nursing department and sees that adequate stocks are maintained
    • Determines that incident reports are made out as necessary or as indicated and reviews such on a routine basis
    • Is available for call when needed by the staff members on duty in matters pertaining to nursing care or emergencies
    • Assures that pharmacy and dietary recommendations are completed
    • Assures that Gradual Dose Reductions are completed per state and federal regulations

    Performs any other duties as may be necessary as specified by the administrator of the facility
