DEPARTMENT : Nursing SUPERVISOR(S ): Administrator, Director of Nursing Licensing/Certification: Hold a current, unencumbered license in this state as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse. Must be registered with the State Board of Registration in this state. Education: Must be a graduate of an accredited educational institution (school of nursing) or a graduate of a state approved school of practical nursing. Experience: At least two full years of nursing experience, preferably in long-term care with leadership and management experience. Must be able to work under the leadership of the Director of Nursing. Must show warmth, understanding, and responsiveness to residents and their demands and reactions. Must possess ability to use initiative, judgment and resourcefulness. Working knowledge of nursing services, rehabilitation, therapy, administration, supervision, resident care, etc.; operate within scope of Nurse Practice Act; comprehensive knowledge of general nursing theory and practice with knowledge of principles and methods involved in instruction of nursing and auxiliary personnel; ability to assess resident’s needs; familiarity with nursing facility policies, procedures, and regulations; knowledge and application of principles of personnel administration in assigning, supervising, and evaluating activities of the staff; knowledge and application of techniques and methods of resident care; awareness of special diets and their observance; use of medical and nursing equipment; and knowledge of medications and their effects. 1. Assist Director of Nursing with administrative functions as needed. 2. Assume duties of Director of Nursing in his/her absence. 3. Prepare, implement, and evaluate resident assessment and comprehensive care plan regularly. 4. Provide for emotional and physical comfort and safety of residents. 5. Observe, record, report, and treat symptoms and reactions of residents. 6. Follow rehabilitation plans. 7. Interpret facility’s policies and programs to staff. 8. Conduct in-service programs. 9. Evaluate, plan, and organize nursing care according to established policies. 10. Consult with Director of Nursing on admission, room assignment, and discharge of residents. 11. Assure that physician’s orders are carried out. 12. Supervise nursing activities and promote improvement in nursing care. 13. Coordinate nursing services with other departments. 14. Maintain accurate reports and records according to policies and procedures set forth; evaluate and make recommendations for improvements for welfare of residents. 15. Maintain comfortable and pleasant environment and promote elimination of hazards. 16. Ensure supplies are available in proper quantities, equipment is available and in proper condition, and personnel using such supplies and equipment know location and proper care of equipment. 17. Receive reports from charge nurses on each shift and work to ensure maximum total care. 18. Make daily rounds and give report on conditions in nursing service to Director of Nursing. 19. Responsible for assuring accurate recording of medications and narcotics according to procedures outlined in manual. 20. Participate in nursing care as needed. 21. Responsible for direct handling of emergency situations. 22. Supervise meals. 23. Assist with care plans. 24. Assist in solution of nursing service problems. Working Hours: Day Shift: From 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. M-F with one hour off for lunch each day and flexibility to work occasional weekends or as assigned by supervisor. • This description is not intended to be all-inclusive.
