Nursing Supervisor supervises and coordinates activities of nursing personnel in patient care units. Participates in planning work of assigned units and coordinates activities with other patient care units and related departments. Being a Nursing Supervisor ensures that patients' needs are met and evaluates unit nursing care and performance. Monitors patient recordkeeping activities for accuracy, completion and compliance with all regulations. Additionally, Nursing Supervisor requires a bachelor's degree of nursing. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Requires certification as a registered nurse (RN). The Nursing Supervisor supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/ production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions. To be a Nursing Supervisor typically requires 3-5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor.     Summary:
    Under general supervision of the Associate Nurse Executive and in collaboration with the Nursing House Supervisor, acts as a resource center for the tribal health organizations, local clinics, rural and local hospitals, and providers to expedite transfers into and from ANMC.

    Responsibilities:
    • Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice and healthcare services, analyzing appropriate internal and external data and information to identify opportunities in collaboration with stakeholders for improving services and patient outcomes.
    • Evaluates her/his own performance based on professional practice standards, relevant studies and regulations, and organizational criteria identifying areas of strength, as well as areas for professional/practice development.
    • Decisions and actions are based on ethical principles and to foster a non-discriminatory climate in which care is delivered in a manner sensitive to socio-cultural diversity.
    • Promotes research, and integrating evidence-based knowledge into the identification of best practice in the delivery of nursing care to the appropriate population.
    • Promotes and monitors regulatory agency, patient safety standards and customer service expectations for the practice of all aspects of nursing. Ensures access to healthcare for Alaska Natives.
    • Represents ANTHC in external contact with partners, agencies and outside counsel as required. Assists and supports ANTHC leadership in developing current and long-range ANTHC goals and objectives, and in the achievement of those goals and objectives.
    • Utilizes the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements as the foundation for nursing practice.
    • Ensures quality of care to patients and families represents “best in class”, promotes satisfaction of internal and external customers.
    • Coordinates information and assures effective communications between hospital departments.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS
    • Knowledge of Alaska Tribal Health System, ANTHC, and Alaska Native culture(s) and politics.
    • Knowledge of national nursing standards.
    • Knowledge of patient/client and staff data collection systems and processes to support the practice of nursing and the delivery of patient care.
    • Knowledge of healthcare systems and patient flow.
    • Skill in communicating effectively and collaborating with nursing staff at all levels, interdisciplinary teams, executive officers, and other stakeholders in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services.
    • Skill in evaluating factors related to quality, safety, outcomes, effectiveness, cost, and social impact when developing and implementing practice innovations.
    • Skill in using evidence-based practice to develop and implement standards to guide improvement initiatives.
    MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
    • A Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Equivalent knowledge, experience, education, or training may be substituted for education.
    MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
    • Non-supervisory - Five (5) years experience in acute care and/or emergency nursing.
    MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
    • Current registered nurse license in the State of Alaska.
    Current Basic Life Support (BLS) card, ACLS and TNCC.
    PREFERRED CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
    PALS certification is preferred.
