Nursing Supervisor supervises and coordinates activities of nursing personnel in patient care units. Participates in planning work of assigned units and coordinates activities with other patient care units and related departments. Being a Nursing Supervisor ensures that patients' needs are met and evaluates unit nursing care and performance. Monitors patient recordkeeping activities for accuracy, completion and compliance with all regulations. Additionally, Nursing Supervisor requires a bachelor's degree of nursing. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Requires certification as a registered nurse (RN). The Nursing Supervisor supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/ production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions. To be a Nursing Supervisor typically requires 3-5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) / Nursing Supervisor

  • Purpose of this position

    The purpose of this position is to assist the Director of Nursing Service in assessing resident care needs and implementing appropriate action. Implement nursing policies and procedures. Supervise staffing for the nursing department and supervise the quality of nursing care provided to residents.

    Qualifications (to be completed by the facility)

    • Must have current license.
    • License must be free of any encumbrances
    • Must not have any disqualifying findings barring employment as stated by State or Federal regulations.

    Delegation of authority

    • Implement nursing policies and procedures.
    • Supervise nursing care provided to residents.
    • Assure adequate staffing to provide nursing care.

    Primary Functions and Responsibilities

    1. Direct, evaluate and supervise all resident care and initiate corrective action.
    2. Make daily resident rounds and report status of nursing care to the Director of Nursing Service and Administrator.
    3. Supervise implementation of Prospective Payment System Minimum Data Set completion schedule.
    4. Collect resident pre-admission and/or admission information and assist Director of Nursing Service or Designee to determine appropriate level of care.
    5. Supervise implementation of nursing rehabilitation and restorative program.
    6. Participate in review of Quality Indicator reports and implementation of corrective actions to improve resident care.
    7. Assist with analysis of incident and accident investigation reports to determine cause(s) and implement corrective action(s), when appropriate.
    8. Review reports of timely completion of residents’ MDS assessments and care plans with follow-up action as necessary.
    9. Review residents admitted and compare physician orders with each resident’s plan of care to assure appropriate implementation of physician’s plan of care.
    10. Implement the Quality Assessment and Assurance Program, for the nursing department, in cooperation with the Quality Assurance Coordinator.
    11. Analyze quality assurance reports and present to the Quality Assessment and Assurance Committee with a request for recommendations.
    12. Supervise the Infection Control Program by reviewing infection control reports from charge nurses, analyzing data and presenting to Infection Control Committee with a request for recommendations.
    13. Participate in review and analysis of Quality Indicator reports to verify accuracy of MDS data.
    14. Coordinate resident transportation between Nursing Department and the Social Service Department.
    15. Participate in interdisciplinary team and rehabilitation conference meetings.
    16. Supervise central supply ordering between the charge nurses and business office.
    17. Maintain confidentiality of resident and facility information.
    18. Identify safety hazards and initiate corrective action as necessary.
    19. Assess resident equipment and supply needs, and make recommendations to the Director of Nursing Service.
    20. Complete reports and assignments accurately and adhere to established time schedules.
    21. Establish open lines of communication between all nursing personnel and consistently take follow-up action as necessary.
    22. Interview, hire and counsel certified nursing assistants and recommend personnel action(s) to the Director of Nursing Service as necessary.
    23. Observe infection control procedures relating to nursing services.
    24. Be responsible for the safety of residents under his/her care or supervision.
    25. Observe Residents’ Rights policies at all times.
    26. Observe all facility safety policies and procedures.
    27. Come to work as scheduled and consistently demonstrate dependability and punctuality.
    28. Consistently work cooperatively with administration, nursing service personnel, physicians, community agencies, residents, families and consultants.
    29. Come to work in a clean, neat uniform and consistently present a professional appearance.
    30. Accept assigned duties in cooperative manner.
    31. Assume accountability for data contained in the employees’ handbook.
    32. Perform other related duties as directed by his/her supervisor.
    33. Perform all duties assigned in an effective, timely and professional manner.
    34. Ensure that reference material (e.g., PDRs, regulations, professional standards of practice, etc.) at the nurses’ station is current. Recommend new resources.
    35. Ensure that all nursing service personnel comply with the nursing service policy and procedure manual.
    36. Complete and process accident/incident reports according to facility policy.
    37. Agree not to disclose assigned user I.D. code and password for accessing resident/facility information and promptly report suspected in known violations of such disclosure to Director of Nursing.
    38. Agree not to disclose resident’s protect health information and promptly report suspected or known violations of such disclosure to the Director of Nursing.
    39. Attend various committee meetings of the facility as required.
    40. Ability to work other shifts as needed.
