Nursing Supervisor supervises and coordinates activities of nursing personnel in patient care units. Participates in planning work of assigned units and coordinates activities with other patient care units and related departments. Being a Nursing Supervisor ensures that patients' needs are met and evaluates unit nursing care and performance. Monitors patient recordkeeping activities for accuracy, completion and compliance with all regulations. Additionally, Nursing Supervisor requires a bachelor's degree of nursing. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Requires certification as a registered nurse (RN). The Nursing Supervisor supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/ production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions. To be a Nursing Supervisor typically requires 3-5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. The Nursing Supervisor manages nursing activities in the delivery of quality, cost-effective patient care. He/she directs, coordinates and participates in the delivery of patient care. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, input on staff performance appraisals, staff and scheduling, quality improvement, achievement of departmental goals, and membership on Nurse Management Council.
Graduate from an approved professional RN Nursing Program. Current Iowa RN license. Current Certification in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life. At least two years of clinical experience preferably in Emergency Department or in the Medical-Surgical area. Demonstrates knowledge of and commitment to policies and procedures of MMC. Possesses technical skills and knowledge of equipment mechanisms necessary to deliver quality nursing care. Demonstrates effective leadership and management skills.
Consistently follows department policy, procedure and standards in performance of all job tasks. Performs all job tasks using safe behaviors consistent with departmental and organizational standards of practice and new programs for the department. Reviews/revises policies and procedures yearly and as needed. Prepares and evaluates capital and expense budgets. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility. maintains staff, equipment and supply levels to assure overall functioning of the department. Maintains knowledge and compliance with regulatory agencies and standards/safety goals. Maintains effective communication/relationships with medical practitioners, medical director and nursing leaders. Provides staff with recognitions and disciplinary action as appropriate. Mentors staff. Serves as positive role model and resource person to staff. Demonstrates ability to assume leadership. Makes clinical decisions independently and in collaboration with peers based on scientific principles, systematic approach and experience. Assists with QI activities for the department.
