Nursing Supervisor supervises and coordinates activities of nursing personnel in patient care units. Participates in planning work of assigned units and coordinates activities with other patient care units and related departments. Being a Nursing Supervisor ensures that patients' needs are met and evaluates unit nursing care and performance. Monitors patient recordkeeping activities for accuracy, completion and compliance with all regulations. Additionally, Nursing Supervisor requires a bachelor's degree of nursing. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Requires certification as a registered nurse (RN). The Nursing Supervisor supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/ production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions. To be a Nursing Supervisor typically requires 3-5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor.   • Position Purpose

    Under the direction of the Manager or Director and in conjunction with the Shared Governance Council, this position is accountable for directing and coordinating the delivery of patient care and the general functioning of the nursing unit. The role of the Nurse Supervisor is to assist in achievement of organizational goals through and with the effort of others.

     

     

     

    Nature and Scope

    This is a clinically focused position that is challenged to maintain a well-organized and functioning nursing unit that allows for the enhancement of evidenced based practice and continuity of patient care throughout the healthcare continuum. The Nurse Supervisor coordinates care and collaborates with other professional disciplines as needed, to optimize patient outcomes.

     

    The Nurse Supervisor acts as a role model, resource, and coach to all nursing staff to provide ongoing support for professional development, maintenance of the standards of care and quality outcomes.

     

    The Nurse Supervisor facilitates professional relationships between physicians, nursing and interdisciplinary teams to provide a patient focused plan of care.

     

    The Nurse Supervisor requires leadership skills and flexibility to adjust hours to be a resource to all shifts.

     

    The Nurse Supervisor will be responsible for engaging the nursing staff to provide evidence based practice, promoting desired patient outcomes and ensuring that practice is congruent with the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics.

     

    Technological advances dictate that the Nurse Supervisor is well versed in procedures common to the department or unit served. In addition, proficiency in the techniques of leadership and adult learning theories are necessary to coordinate the activities of all health team members, and to maintain positively engaged, competent nursing staff.

     

    Other challenges of this position include the ability to recognize dynamics of change and respond appropriately within the context of accepted current theory. Creativity and innovation is expected from the incumbent to help staff function as a high performance work team and to promote staff retention.

     

    The Nurse Supervisor is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients and families. The Nurse Supervisor must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, motor/sensory, psychosocial and safety appropriate to the age of the patient served and meet the standards of quality as measured by the unit/department Competence with Special Populations standard.

    Description

    Education:

    Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English. BSN or related bachelor’s degree preferred, or pursuit of a Bachelor’s Degree upon hire.

    Experience:

    Two years experience as a Staff RN preferred.

    License(s):

    Ability to obtain and maintain a State of Nevada Registered Nurse license.

    Certification(s):

    Current AHA BLS certification by American Heart Association standards required. Professional certification preferred.

     

    RNFA: RN may perform in the capacity of a first assist if he or she is a graduate of an accredited school of Nursing, Completion of a RNFA program that includes didactic and supervised clinical practice, is based on AORN's core curriculum for the RNFA 200201, 400201, 200340

     

    200255 and 200266 require ACLS and PALS within 6 months of hire. Point of Care Analyst (POCA) required within 6 months of hire.

    Computer / Typing:

    Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and Word and have the ability to use the computer to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
