    The Placer County Elections Office is seeking temporary/extra help Senior Elections Aides for the March 5, 2024 election.

    Application materials will be screened on a weekly basis. To be considered for the next round of interviews, application materials must be submitted by Noon on Fridays.

    Senior Elections Aides are responsible for performing a wide variety of tasks including, but not limited to, providing lead direction and overseeing election aide staff, volunteers, and the public at vote centers; assigning daily breaks and meal periods to elections aide staff; responding to public inquiries by telephone, email, or in person regarding general voting information; analyzing, troubleshooting and resolving issues or concerns which arise at vote centers; and overseeing the issuance of ballots to voters at vote centers. Senior Elections Aides will be required to attend a mandatory training.

    Vote Centers will be open for voting for either a 4 or 11-day voting period. Depending on which you are assigned to, you will either be required to work from Saturday, February 24, 2024 through Tuesday, March 5, 2024 or from Saturday, March 2, 2024 through Tuesday, March 5, 2024. You must be able to work either all eleven or all four days.

    POSITION INFORMATION

    To work the election, you must meet the following criteria: 

    • Be at least 18 years of age (or a minimum of 16 years of age if participating in the Student Poll Worker Program)
    • Be a registered voter in the State of California OR a permanent legal resident of the United States
    • Be able to read and write in fluent English
    • Be able to attend a mandatory training prior to the election 
    Prior to the date of hire, applicants must undergo a fingerprint test by the Department of Justice and may require a pre-employment physical.

    DEFINITION

    (Unclassified)

    Under supervision, performs a variety of higher-level manual and clerical tasks preparing elections materials; issues ballots, checks and verifies signatures and records precinct petitions; prepares for election vote counting; and performs other work as required.

    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

    This is the advanced journey level classification in the Elections Aide series.  Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assigned, the complexity of duties assigned, independence of action taken, and by the nature of the public contact made.  Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of election day support duties assigned to classes within this series, are expected to be fully trained in their functional area of assignment, and may provide technical and functional supervision over an assigned elections team comprised of lower level staff, volunteers, and the public. 

    Incumbents in this classification work on an extra-help only basis, and as such cannot work more than 1000 hours in a fiscal year, nor are they eligible to be transitioned into a permanent full-time position.  Assigned tasks are performed on an as-needed basis, usually during peak work periods generated by preparatory and subsequent activities related to elections. 

    EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Provide lead direction and oversee election aide staff, volunteers, and the public at polling places and/or voter service centers.
    • Assign daily breaks and meal periods to elections aide staff.
    • Respond to public inquiries by telephone, email, or in person regarding general voting information.
    • Assist the public by providing requested forms and with completing forms.
    • Review and verify voter information using a voter registration database.
    • Oversee the issuance of ballots to voters at polling places and/or voter service centers.
    • Analyze, troubleshoot and resolve issues or concerns which arise at the polling places and or/voter service centers; identify corrective action if needed and notify appropriate department staff.
    • Verify official seals and logs on ballot boxes, voting equipment and election storage.
    • Verify signatures on voter registration affidavit forms, conditional voter registration (CVR), provisional envelopes and ballot envelopes.
    • Proofread sample ballots, official ballots, and other elections material.
    • Perform clerical tasks including filing, sorting, filling envelopes with voting materials, and batching.
    • Perform a variety of assigned tasks in preparation for election vote counting.
    • Prepare precinct supplies by packing boxes of materials.
    • Locate polling places and voter service centers to pick up ballots and other supplies.
    • Perform related duties as assigned.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Work can be performed in an indoor environment or warehouse environment.  Positions are also required to travel to and from voting center locations in a variety of outdoor weather conditions and may lift materials and supplies of light to moderate weight.  Incumbents will be required to work odd or unusual hours, including nights and weekends.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    It is the responsibility of applicants to identify in their application materials how they meet the minimum qualifications listed below.

    Experience and Training: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

    Experience: Some paid work or voluntary experience assisting with elections, including public contact which provides the abilities required above. Experience working with the public at a lead or supervisory level is desirable.

    Training: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

    License or Certificate: May need to possess a valid driver’s license as required by the position. Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    Knowledge of:

    • English usage, spelling, and punctuation.
    • Basic office methods and equipment.
    • Basic mathematical calculations.
    • Customer service principles and practices.
    • Procedures for maintaining inventory records.
    • Methods for the care and operation of common duplicating bindery and postage equipment.

    Ability to:

    • On continuous basis, sit at desk and/or stand at counter for long periods of time. Intermittently twist and reach office equipment; bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist when operating equipment; write or use keyboard; occasionally run errands, lift light to moderate weight.
    • Intermittently review and verify documents related to election operations to include verification of authenticity of signatures.
    • Provide technical and functional supervision over assigned staff and volunteers.
    • Perform routine mathematical calculations.
    • Operate, adjust, and maintain duplicating, bindery and postage equipment.
    • Proofread documents for correctness and consistency.
    • Verify and check data.
    • Establish effective working relationships with the public to explain and interpret forms and procedures.
    • Understand and carry out both oral and written directions.
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
