    As a Behavior Specialist, you will guide and assist with our school-wide/classroom implementation of the positive behavior support program, increasing positive student behaviors. This position always focuses first on proactive strategies when working with challenging behaviors and is immediately available to respond to crisis situations with the ability to de-escalate students using CPI strategies, behavioral contracts and interventions documented in student’s behavioral intervention plan, if applicable.

    ‖ Responsibilities Include:

    • Utilizing crisis interventions to ensure the safety of the student and others only and as a last resort. Implementing crisis interventions with the least restrictive method that is effective in ensuring safety.
    • Providing appropriate crisis intervention as necessary using the least restrictive method by anticipating and responding quickly to escalating behaviors, utilizing appropriate de-escalation techniques to diffuse the situation, correctly prioritizing safety concerns, following proper physical restraint techniques, and displaying neutral emotions.
    • Reporting and documenting incidents that are identified within the Incident Reporting Policy in accordance with the policy.
    • Completing CPI training and providing colleagues with support in crisis and escalation situations. Additionally, providing coaching to colleagues regarding CPI interventions to provide the best possible educational environment for students to succeed.
    • Keeping students and others at the lowest possible accident incident rate by anticipating and preventing accidents; providing First Aide when necessary; assisting in determining the need for outside medical attention; ensuring that students receive their medications.
    • Identifying potential safety issues/hazards and reporting to the site safety committee and to your supervisor. This may include participating in and/or chairing the safety committee.
    • Assisting with the medications to be provided to students during the school day, when additional supplies are needed and when changes (new medications modifications to dosage, etc.) occur. This includes coordinating the ordering of first aid supplies and maintenance of the first aid area (room) for the campus.
    • Completing accurate and timely documentation on student’s behavior as outlined by school procedures; reporting observations to relevant staff and making recommendations based on observations. Assisting in preparation of other behavioral reports and daily activities logs as required. Maintaining confidentiality of student information and records at all times.
    • Helping to complete and present company sponsored crisis management training, to implement and oversee the usage of crisis management procedures in the classroom or within the school and community environment.
    • Attending and participating in clinical meetings, supervision meetings, all—staff meetings, teacher meetings, annual planning and action teams as directed and addressing crisis management issues, to consult with the site and clinical teams as needed.
    • Implementing antecedent intervention strategies (i.e., high levels of praise and low levels of negative feedback, teaching replacement behaviors, etc.) and consequence-based intervention strategies (i.e., redirection, modeling, positive practice, etc.) as outlined in students’ Positive Behavior Intervention Plan.
    • Maintaining familiarity with all student behavior intervention programs in order to facilitate effective crisis management.
    • Providing emergency clinical coverage during program hours (including transportation), arranging for coverage for these duties when off site.
    • Performing other duties and projects as assigned.

    ‖ Qualifications Required:

    • Bachelors degree or higher in behavioral sciences or related field.
    • Special education certification preferred.
    • Registered behavior technician license preferred.
    • Experience in positive behavior intervention and supports (PBIS) preferred.
    • Prior experience working with students with severe emotional and/or behavioral disorders.
    • Ability to think and act quickly and calmly in an emergency situation and make independent decisions.
    • Excellent oral and written communication, instruction, conflict resolution, multitasking, problem-solving, decision making and organizational skills.
    • Knowledge of relevant technology including experience with computers, Microsoft Office Suite, database entry and basic office equipment.
