    Pay Range

    $110,700.00 - $142,128.00 Annually for the SES.1 level
    $132,810.00 - $170,556.00 Annually for the SES.2 level

    Job Description

    We are seeking highly qualified Engineers to join our team to conduct applied research in oil and natural gas (ONG) system modeling and simulation. You will apply skills and knowledge related to ONG production, transmission, and/or distribution systems modeling and simulation and familiarity with industrial control system design and/or operations to analyze threats, risks, and mitigations for infrastructure systems. You will support LLNL's Cyber and Infrastructure Resilience (CIR) program's growing research portfolio in ONG system infrastructure security by building models and running simulations to characterize localized and system-level conditions and impacts under varying conditions. These positions are in the Computational Engineering Division (CED) within the Engineering Directorate.

    These positions will be filled at eitherthe SES.1 or SES.2 level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

    You will

    • Conduct research in ONG modeling and simulation which helps to characterize local and system level impacts of component faults and disruptions.
    • Develop and apply threats and security risks to modeling and simulation scenarios and propose or assess mitigation options.
    • Support complex research projects with competing priorities and implement advanced research concepts in a multidisciplinary team environment where dedication and deadlines are important to project success.
    • Contribute solutions to complex problems by collaborating with scientists and researchers across a variety of technical disciplines.
    • Provide decision insight to stakeholders in complex problem areas.
    • Develop, evaluate, and apply physical and computational simulation to gain insight into complex systems.
    • Partner with other LLNL scientists and engineers to bring research results to practical use in LLNL national security programs.
    • Communicate complex technical concepts to internal stakeholders in a concise and effective way.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.2 level

    • Balance multiple projects/tasks and priorities of customers and partners to ensure deadlines are met, while working independently with minimal direction within scope of the assignment.
    • Lead various complex projects, effectively leveraging the skills of diverse team members.
    • Mentor other staff in your technical expertise area.
    • Routinely interact with technical contacts at sponsor and partner organizations.

    Qualifications
    • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
    • Bachelor's degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, industrial, or civil), computer sciences (data or information science), operations research, related fields or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
    • Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas: ONG production, transmission, or distribution modeling and/or simulation; industrial control systems design and operation at ONG facilities.
    • Experience with steady-state and dynamic pipeline system modeling tools such as: Synergi Gas, WinFlow, WinTran, PipelineStudio, PIPESIM, PIPE-FLO, or other similar tools.
    • Ability to use standard programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB/Simulink, C/C ) to support modeling and visualization.
    • Sufficient verbal and written communication skills needed to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information, document work, and provide advice to decision makers.
    • Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills to develop creative solutions to complex problems.

    Additional qualifications at the SES.2 level

    • Comprehensive knowledge and broad experience in the application and development in one or more of the following areas: ONG production, transmission, or distribution modeling and/or simulation; industrial control systems design and operation at ONG facilities.
    • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information to a variety of audiences.

    Qualifications We Desire

    • Master's degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, industrial, or civil), computer sciences (data or information science), operations research, related fields or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
    • Knowledge of energy sector threats, risks, and security measures.
    • Experience working with utilities, system operators, or system integrators.
    • Experience deriving and presenting analytical results and insights to non-technical audiences.
