    JOB TITLE:

    Assistant Research Scientist

    JOB PURPOSE:

    Research Scientists are academic professionals whose primary responsibilities are to conduct and support research. UW Regulation 2-7 describes the activities that fall into this set of responsibilities for faculty; the same definition of research applies to Academic Professionals.

    About WYSAC:

    The Wyoming Survey & Analysis Center (WYSAC), a unit of the University of Wyoming, conducts evaluation research, policy studies, and polling under contract to governmental and private entities in Wyoming and across the United States. WYSAC specializes in research related to criminal justice, substance abuse, public and behavioral health, education, the environment, and public opinion. The staff consists of more than 20 professional researchers with degrees in statistics, political science, psychology, sociology, economics, information technology, business, and other policy-relevant disciplines. Housed in the UW Office Annex in Laramie, Wyoming, WYSAC's facilities include a fully equipped call center for computer-aided telephone interviewing.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Conduct social policy research and evaluation in criminal and juvenile justice, mental health, and substance abuse-related areas. Job duties may include program evaluation; technical assistance and consultation with University, state, and federal funding agencies; outcome assessment (designing, gathering, analyzing, preparing, and presenting data for various projects); statistical analysis; needs assessment; report writing; data presentation; and coordination of and participation in community-based field research. In addition, the successful applicant may assist senior research scientists in preparing grant and contract applications; drafting reports and manuscripts for publication; providing consultation or training to the public or the University community; preparing literature reviews; and traveling to state, regional, and national conferences.

    REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

    This position is eligible for remote work and/or a flexible work schedule.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    A master's degree in social science is required, along with strong research and analytical skills and methodological knowledge applicable to social science research projects. A strong background in criminal justice, juvenile justice, and policy evaluation is desired. Specific technical experience needed includes experience in research methodology and data analysis, the ability to conduct independent research, and to summarize and synthesize research findings. In addition, applicants should demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational skills from prior work settings, experience in qualitative and quantitative research (including research design), and critical analysis. The ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and clients in an entrepreneurial environment is essential.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    An understanding of issues and best practices in criminal justice and juvenile justice, domestic and intimate partner violence, firearms policy, or co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders in justice-involved populations would be beneficial. Other desirable qualifications include the ability to create new survey and evaluation instruments as needed, data management skills, a thorough understanding of data analysis, experience in securing contracts and grants for funded research, culturally- and trauma-informed research practices, and prior experience with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, and statistical analysis software (R, SAS, Stata, NVivo, QDA Miner, etc.).
