A LTCÂ Unit Manager must wear many hats. He or she will be responsible for the supervision of nursing staff as well as the overall monitoring of patient care. Leadership and diplomacy are absolute requirements as well as having effective communication skills.
The general responsibilities of a Unit Manager fall within two categories:
1. Supervisory
2. Clinical
Supervisory:
Oversees RNs, LPNs and nursing aides, and support staff
Responsible for scheduling, assignments, performance evaluations praising good performance and disciplining poorly performing employees
Mentors nursing staff as needed
Sets unit goals and standards
Clinical:
Establishes nursing care standards based on best practices and latest research
Ensures that patient care meets these standards
Analyzes patient records to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of care
Consults with physicians as necessary
Develops relationship with family to ensure a partnership of care for the resident
An applicant for Nursing Unit Manager Jobs requires the following:
Must be either a licensed RN/LPN in the state of New Jersey
A Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing is desirable
Business or management training, either as a second major, minor or elective courses is a plus
The ideal candidate will possess previous management experience as an assistant manager or charge nurse.
