Ophthalmic Technician provides technical services to assigned ophthalmic patients and assists ophthalmologists or optometrists in the examination and treatment of eye disorders. Takes patient history, conducts visual acuity screenings, and performs various technical procedures, including refractometry, tonometry, lensometry, and keratometry. Being an Ophthalmic Technician prepares patients for exams and procedures. Operates, maintains, and sanitizes ophthalmic equipment and instruments. Additionally, Ophthalmic Technician may assist physicians in performing minor surgical and laser procedures. May dispense contact lenses. Typically requires an associate degree. May require Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA). May require Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT). Typically reports to a manager. List of Responsibilities/Duties:
· Perform technical workups, patient interviews, and special testing when needed.
· Communicate with patients regarding follow-up care, surgeries, procedures, changes in schedule, symptoms, surgery scheduling, etc.
· Maintain and clean all equipment being used.
· Return phone calls to patients and pharmacies.
· Assist in minor surgeries.
· Maintain patient confidentiality.
· Efficiently and accurately interview patients and document histories.
· Accurately perform refractions, lensometry, keratometry, tonometry, confrontational visual fields, Amsler grids, muscle testing, pupil exams, topography, visual acuities, Optomap, and triage.
· Transcribe all information found and discussed during the comprehensive exam.
· Required to proofread the chart once completed, including medical history, technician workup, doctor’s exam, diagnosis, and plan.
· Be the main or backup point of contact for the specific doctor’s clinic. This requires you to be knowledgeable with their preferences and liaise with the rest of the office.
· Act as a contact for patients’ questions, maintaining a prompt and informative reply when contacted via email or phone.
· Possess some knowledge of billing and coding as you will be required to properly code all diagnosis and bill proper amounts for complete and brief exams and possible diagnostic testing.
· Other job duties may be assigned by your Supervisor.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
Minimum Education Requirements:
· High school diploma or GED
· Previous experience or training in this or similar position.
Minimum Background Requirements:
· Good understanding of ophthalmic practices and patient care.
· Knowledge of medical instruments and proper care and usage.
· Ability to access common safety hazards and take precautions to establish a safe work environment.
· Ability to communicate with patients, coworkers, and supervisor.
· Willingness to help in all areas and understand the need for efficient use of time.
