Optician measures and fits contact lenses and eyeglass frames based on prescriptions written by ophthalmologists or optometrists. Takes precision measurements of eyes using a pupilometer and other devices to ensure proper fit of eyeglasses or contact lenses. Being an Optician assists and advises customers in selecting frames based on their prescription, lifestyle needs, and style preferences. Inspects lenses for quality, fits and adjusts eyewear, and repairs eyewear as needed. Additionally, Optician instructs customer on correct eyeglasses and contact lens care and maintenance. May process work orders and sales. Requires a high school diploma. Requires Applicable License. Requires Licensed Optician. Typically reports to a manager. Responsibilities:
- Assist customers in selecting and fitting eyeglasses and contact lenses
- Take accurate measurements of customers' eyes and facial features to ensure proper fit
- Educate customers on lens options, frames, and lens enhancements
- Adjust and repair eyewear as needed
- Maintain inventory of frames and contact lenses
- Process insurance claims and handle medical coding for billing purposes
- Provide exceptional customer service and address any concerns or issues
Experience:
- Previous experience as an optician or in a similar role preferred
- Knowledge of physiology related to vision and eye health
- Familiarity with optical sales techniques and retail math
- Proficiency in using electronic health record systems (Epic) for medical records management
- Strong communication skills to effectively interact with customers, doctors, and other staff members
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail
