Inspects lenses for quality, fits and adjusts eyewear, and repairs eyewear as needed. Additionally, Optician instructs customer on correct eyeglasses and contact lens care and maintenance.     Job Summary: This is an entry level position of the Optician career ladder. The goal of the position is to have the incumbent fully licensed (Licensed Optician) within 4 years from start of Level 1 Apprentice. The incumbent is expected to spend no more than 1 year at this sublevel. Incumbent must have the ability and willingness to learn the skills needed to become a Licensed Optician.

    Adhere to the TCC Ch’eghwtsen’ model of service and guiding principle which requires providing timely and effective service along with the ability to interact with others in a way that inspires trust and demonstrates respect, compassion and empathy.


    Essential Functions

    Representative Duties:
    Under the direct supervision of the Optical Office Manager, job incumbent:

    1. Communicates with patient/customer concerning eyeglasses and contact lenses.

    2. Recommends eyeglass frames, lenses and lens coating to patients with written prescription.

    3. Prepares work orders to ophthalmic laboratory needed to order prescription eyeglasses.

    4. Verifies prescription of eyeglasses, assuring lens are made to the prescription before dispensing.

    5. Fixes, adjusts and refits broken eyeglasses.

    6. Instructs patients about adapting to, wearing and caring for eyeglasses.

    7. Helps maintain the frame and contact lens inventory, orders frames from vendors, pricing and returning stock as needed.

    8. Provides office support functions as needed, including patient scheduling, receptionist duties, data entry, filing, maintaining patient records, managing correspondence and mail, maintaining clean and tidy waiting area, typing and other related office duties.

    9. Reinforces eye care education to all patients/customers.

    10. Adheres to the TCC Ch’eghwtsen’ model of service and guiding principle which requires providing timely and effective service along with the ability to interact with others in a way that inspires trusts and demonstrates respect, compassion and empathy.

    Other Responsibilities:

    1. Performs other clinic-related duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications



    Minimum Qualifications:

    1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

    2. Apply for professional license to practice as Apprentice Optician in State of Alaska required.

    3. Two or more years of professional (optometry, medical, legal, etc.) office experience where patients’ confidentiality issues are paramount.

    4. Job incumbent must reach level of Licensed Optician within 6 years from hire date.

    5. Frequent overnight village travel is required6. Must pass background check pursuant to federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements and State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS).

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    1. Strong, verbal, written and interpersonal skills.

    2. Experience with computers particularly valuable.

    3. Excellent manual dexterity for working optical tools.

    Supervision:
    This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

    Physical demands: This work requires sitting, walking, standing, bending and carrying items, such as books, papers, files and eyeglass/contact lens inventory. Required at times to lift and carry up to 50 pounds in support of eye exam equipment. Excellent manual dexterity for working with optical hand tools. Frequent overnight village travel is required. Must be able to work efficiently and effectively in a busy and sometimes stressful environment.


    Summation



    Summation: This position has high contact with the public. Stressful situations arise making strong interpersonal skills in dealing with the public and other eye care team members a must. Individual selected will frequently be the sole optician/tech present in the eye clinic (either at the facility or in the field). Patience needed with contact lens patients, teaching insertion and removal techniques.
