Orthopedic Technician applies and adjusts plaster casts and assembles and attaches orthopedic traction equipment and devices as directed by a physician. Sets up bed traction units or rigs special devices as required, and inspects and adjusts bandages and equipment. Being an Orthopedic Technician requires a high school diploma or its equivalent, completion of Orthopedic Technician training and certification program. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Orthopaedic technician is responsible for working under the supervision of an RN, Practitioner and/or Physician in the treatment of bone and joint injuries in an ambulatory clinic setting. The incumbent must possess the clinical skills in the application and removal of casts, splints, braces and other essential DME products, including the effective and safe use of equipment required to perform such duties. The Orthopaedic Technician must demonstrate competency in caring for and educating patients on wound care, appropriate use and care of assistive devices or aids. The Orthopaedic Technician must be able to perform many tasks independently, adequately document in the patients electronic record while ensuring measures are taken to protect patient confidential information.
