Orthopedic Technician applies and adjusts plaster casts and assembles and attaches orthopedic traction equipment and devices as directed by a physician. Sets up bed traction units or rigs special devices as required, and inspects and adjusts bandages and equipment. Being an Orthopedic Technician requires a high school diploma or its equivalent, completion of Orthopedic Technician training and certification program. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.   • Duties

    Duties include but not limited to:

    • Assist in all post-op suture staple removals and steri-strip removals.
    • Set up sterile field for manipulation and assist the provider with appropriate dressings.
    • Retrieve medication to be administered by the provider for scheduled procedures.
    • Assist patients in positioning for procedures using any lifts, turns and devices that may be applicable for the patient.
    • Perform a range of diagnostic support duties which include taking, recording, and reporting to the provider deviations in vital signs.
    • Handle all specimen collection and pathological labeling of biopsied specimens, and functions as primary scrub person on all procedures.
    • Take surgical grade pictures of lesion site or location and then document and download into electronic health record (EHR) and label images for patient records.
    • Perform EKGs on all cardiology patients with or without magnet per provider direction.
    • Instruct patients and families in post procedure care using standard information sheets per provider instruction.
    • Operate Bladder Volume Index (BVI) machines and conduct urine testing.

    Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm or 8:30am - 5:00pm

    Physical Requirements: Work involves long hours of standing, stooping, bending, and stretching without a break during procedures which require concentration. Manual dexterity and agility are required to correctly assemble instruments. Strain is incurred in staying alert on long cases under difficult situations. The work requires lifting, pushing, reaching above shoulders and carrying of items or objects weighing up to 45 pounds.

    Qualifications

    To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

    GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-XX grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
    Specialized experience includes: providing patient care by performing personal care, diagnostic support, treatment procedures (such as taking orthostatic vital signs, collecting specimens, applying casts, splints, or cast braces, operating cast saw for removing, cutting, or trimming casts), patient care documentation, and applying the principles of infection control, safety, and universal precautions, which contributes to the implementation and continuity of the care planned, for the health of the patient. OR

    Education (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED): Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-06 level.I understand that Education at the GS-5 or Above is Generally, not applicable unless directly related. I have successfully completed one year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
