Summary:
Spray paints, primer, and sandblast surfaces of heavy steel products to clean and apply paints with limited supervision by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Sandblasts heavy steel equipment to an SP 14 finish to prepare the product for painting. For example: truck bodies require sandblasting to company and customer specifications that include the outside, the bottom of the canopy, the bottom of the front wall, and the floor on the outside.
Directs movement and placement of products and equipment to be painted.
Cleans grease and dirt from products with the use of Xylene, sandblasting, and air hose.
Applies grease, masking tape, or stencils, over parts and areas of products that are not to be coated.
Knowledge and experience on how to operate quart gun sprayers.
Moves equipment, ladders, and materials to the location of the paint site.
Connect the paint pump ground wire to the material being painted.
Prepares spray machine: checks it for proper functioning and mixes according to customer or company specifications.
Turns sprayer valves and nozzle to regulate the width and pressure of spray.
Reads gauges to determine air pressure and temperatures of equipment, paint, and room temperatures.
Pulls trigger and directs spray onto the work surface to apply prime, and finish coat according to specified thickness with the required gloss and ensures paint covers all surfaces of the product by examining all surfaces visually. Minimum runs and drips are allowed in the finished paint.
Reads engineering prints to determine paint specifications and for identification and marking of the part number. Reads and understands body construction sheets and must refer to Supervisor as needed if there are questions.
Paint logos with a paintbrush after the product is fully painted.
Cleans spraying equipment and brushes with solvent.
Contacts Quality Assurance to receive blast audit, primer audit, and final inspection of finished product.
Uses and cares for respirator equipment at the end of each shift to ensure proper fit and protection for each use.
Fills out Production Report and Paint Acceptance forms with appropriate Labor Reporting codes, text, and numbers daily.
Complies with quality standards set by Customer and Company by always following specifications and instructions.
Complies with all applicable safety guidelines at all times by correcting hazards, informing the supervisor, or recommending guidance to co-workers(s) to avoid injury or damage to employees or equipment.
Complies with applicable company policies and tool check-out procedures.
Other Duties:
Maintains work area in a clean and organized manner to minimize fire, tripping, and other hazards.
Provides guidance regarding safety, work procedures, and methods to less experienced employees in similar jobs.
Employees are held accountable for all duties of this job performed in environmental conditions applicable to the location of the work site.
Performs related work as required.

Personal Protective Equipment:
ANSI-approved steel-toed boots, ANSI-approved safety glasses with side protectors, and ANSI-approved class B hard hat and hearing protection are to be used. Supplied air respirators, face shields, fall protection devices, and gloves are used as needed. Full-faced, half mask and ANSI-approved steel-toed boots with metatarsal guards are recommended.
Education and/or Experience:
One year of experience with industrial painting processes. Knowledge of Xylene thinners and paint mix procedures and ability to work with other paint products as needed or required by Austin or our customers.
Familiar with the use of airless, conventional, and quart gun applications.
Proper use and care of PPE. Blasting helmet and respirators.
Ability to troubleshoot common spray gun and sandblasting issues.
Knowledge of different spray techniques and tip sizes for various coatings.
Ability to use fall protection and retractable lanyards.
Ability to safely operate scissor lifts and man lifts.
Ability to spray up to 60 gallons of product a day.
Experience and familiarity with confined spaces.
