The Excelsior Community Food Pantry, collaboratively hosted by Mission Bay Community Church and the Jewish Home of San Francisco, is seeking a part-time food pantry captain to help with the leadership and logistics of operating our Saturday pantries which are bilingual in Cantonese. We serve fresh fruits, vegetables, and protein to over 300 San Francisco families on a weekly basis.
If you are interested in food access, service to the community, or simply LOTS of food, this may be a great fit for you! The hours are 9 am to 1 pm on Saturdays plus 15 minutes of data entry. The position pays $85 per Saturday worked for 3-4 Saturdays per month. The pantry is located at 302 Silver Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94112.
Key responsibilities of the captain position:
- The captain will arrive on time for the food delivery at 9 am on Saturdays and stay until the end of cleanup and close of the pantry.
- The captain will set and update the amounts of each food item to be distributed that day.
- The captain will serve as the lead contact during setup, distribution, and cleanup.
- The captain will lead 'circle time' prior to each Saturday's food distribution, welcoming new volunteers and facilitating introductions, etc...
- The captain will be able to speak to participants and volunteers in English and Cantonese.
- The captain will help with operations as needed, moving boxes and tables, flattening boxes, sweeping, etc. The captain must be able to lift 25 pounds.
- The captain will build strong relationships with key pantry leaders and regular volunteers.
- The captain will take no food/leftovers to avoid a perceived conflict of interest in food allocation/distribution.
- The captain will NOT be a registered SFMFB participant while in the role of a paid staff member.
- The captain is in regular contact individually with the steering committee mentor and steering committee at large (via the ECFP leadership Google group) with updates on concerns, interpersonal conflicts, emergencies, and items of note that come up.
