Paralegal assists and supports attorneys with research and document preparation for court proceedings and legal transactions. Utilizes a variety of sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, and legal codes to research and analyze legal topics. Being a Paralegal drafts and edits legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, motions, and contracts. Conducts fact-finding, data collection, and analysis used to prepare statements and arguments. Additionally, Paralegal assists attorneys with depositions, interviews, discovery, and investigations. Manages, organizes, and archives documents with software tools and technology. Applies specialized legal terminology appropriately in documents. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically requires Paralegal Certification. Typically reports to an attorney. The Paralegal work is generally independent and collaborative in nature. Contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. To be a Paralegal typically requires 4 -7 years of related experience. At this level, the Paralegal/Legal Assistant III participates in the substantive development of cases. In this capacity, the incumbent performs the following:
a. Analyzes and evaluates case files against litigation worthiness standards;
b. Notes and corrects case file deficiencies (e.g., missing documents, inconsistent material, leads not investigated) before sending the case on to the concerned trial attorney;
c. Reviews and analyzes available precedents relevant to cases under consideration for use in presenting case summaries to trial attorneys;
d. Gathers, sorts, classifies, and interprets data to discover patterns of possible discriminatory activity;
e. Interviews relevant personnel and potential witnesses to gather information;
f. Reviews and analyzes relevant statistics;
g. Performs statistical evaluations such as standard deviations, analyses of variance, means, modes, and ranges as supporting data for case litigation;
h. Consults with statistical experts on reliability evaluations;
i. May testify in court concerning relevant data.
This position will support NUWC Division Keyport in support of the following: Supply and material Support, System baseline and Engineering Support, Undersea Warfare System Support, Intergraded Warfare Systems (IWS) System Support, Technical Data Support, Engineering and Technical Support, and Training and Instructional Support for Code 40.
The position requires a Secret Clearance.
