Paralegal assists and supports attorneys with research and document preparation for court proceedings and legal transactions. Utilizes a variety of sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, and legal codes to research and analyze legal topics. Being a Paralegal drafts and edits legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, motions, and contracts. Conducts fact-finding, data collection, and analysis used to prepare statements and arguments. Additionally, Paralegal assists attorneys with depositions, interviews, discovery, and investigations. Manages, organizes, and archives documents with software tools and technology. Applies specialized legal terminology appropriately in documents. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically requires Paralegal Certification. Typically reports to an attorney. The Paralegal work is generally independent and collaborative in nature. Contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. To be a Paralegal typically requires 4 -7 years of related experience. Assist the attorneys in preparing for hearings, depositions, trials, and other legal matters. Conduct legal research. File and mail legal documents. Answer telephone calls, greet clients, and accurately relay messages. Maintain schedule of appointments, court dates, and meetings. 3-5 years’ experience working in a law firm preferred. Excellent communication and organizational skills are essential. Excellent time management skills and attention to detail are needed. Strong research and report generating skills are needed. Experience in using legal database software is needed. The candidate must have experience with civil litigation and conducting written discovery. Experience in Federal case law, Appellate case law, Criminal law, and Family Law is a plus.
