Paralegal Manager manages and develops the paralegal team and the systems and processes utilized to conduct research and produce legal documents. Responsible for case management by assigning cases and monitoring progress to ensure timely completion. Being a Paralegal Manager validates and oversees the preparation of legal documents, such as briefs, pleadings, motions, appeals, wills, and contracts. Organizes documents into formal report and proofs for attorneys. Additionally, Paralegal Manager provides research and training support to the paralegals utilizing databases and legal libraries. Coordinates with attorneys on special requests or highly complex projects. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Requires Paralegal Certification. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Paralegal Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Paralegal Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Paralegal will perform substantive billable legal work under the direction of Legal Production Director and one or more Attorneys in the office. A Paralegal’s primary goal is to support our legal team with legal research, drafting memos, pleadings, motions, and orders, and preparing for hearings and trials. A Paralegal provides quality billable service to clients at a lower billable rate than an attorney, providing a benefit to the clients of the Firm.

    Reporting Relationship:

    Paralegals perform their duties under the direction of the Legal Production Director, Lead Attorney, and one or more Attorneys to whom they may be assigned. Paralegals employment relationship with the Firm is managed by the Firm Owners.

    Authority:

    Paralegals are prohibited by the ABA’s rules of Professional Conduct and State Bar Association rules from practicing law. All work done by Paralegals must be in support of and under the direct supervision of an Attorney. In dealing with clients, Paralegals must be careful not to inadvertently slip into the unlawful practice of law. This would include answering client questions about what will happen in their case or recommending that a client undertake a certain course of action during their case.

    • Capable of scheduling case events in the event that the Legal Assistant is not available
    • Monitor case progress, deadlines, and important timeframes/milestones
    • Draft documents, indexes, chronologies; prepare contracts; draft letters and court documents; fill out legal forms; write reports, etc.
    • Help attorneys prepare cases for hearings
    • Maintain and organize files
    • Manage discovery: prepare and organize discovery and responses to discovery demands
    • Manage client relationships and work with experts
    • Research laws and judicial decisions about current as well as past cases
    • Assist lawyers in the courtroom
    • Basic data entry and update case management system
    • Enter billable and non-billable time in the case management system in a timely manner
    • Teamwork. Asking to assist others when all tasks are completed

    Matrix of Tasks

    Daily

    • Follow up with prior day uncompleted assignments
    • Review daily reminders
    • Review daily, weekly, and upcoming monthly calendar items and prioritize work load
    • Complete tasks
    • Triage and prioritize responses to emails
    • Organize, sort, and summarize case information and files
    • Docket (schedule) legal events/ case milestones
    • Draft pleadings/motions/agreements/letters/reports/ documents
    • Prepare discovery and responses to discovery demands
    • Prepare for meetings/ depositions/ hearings
    • Enter billable time
    • Return phone calls to client, opposing counsel, or GAL

    Weekly

    • Meet with associate and legal team for case status updates
    • Provide client updates as needed

    Monthly

    • Attend Case Status Update meetings and update records

    · Review 90, 120, and 180 day calendar for upcoming events and calendar project

    Education & Experience

    A Paralegal will have completed a course of study offered by a college or university especially for Paralegals and will possess a certification as a trained paralegal.

    A Paralegal should have 5 years’ experience in a law firm, preferably Family Law. Experience as a paralegal is especially pertinent, and candidates with this background will be given preference.

    Job Type: Full-time

    Pay: $30,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
